Squelchy fields.....

How do folks.....

Well, me n wor kid ventured out last night in what started off a calm day ended in another blustery night.

We hit the ground early (around 20.30hrs)checked zero and radios and off we went.

The rain we have had up here over the last few days has been quite bad and when I first stepped onto the field you'd think I was walking through a swamp, every footstep was "squelch"...."squelch"!

I got on the radio and asked wor kid what it was like his side and it was exactly the same.

Tonight was going to be hard!

I managed to get to the back of the field after scaring a few away with the wind being behind me blowing my scent straight towards them but now the advantage was on my side. I took it a step at a time so as to make a little noise as possible spotting my first targets, 2 lone bunnies over 50m away. I stalked slowly towards them momentarily stopping every 5m and checking they were still there

I got within 30-35m of them both after a good 5 min stalk, I gave it 1 holdover and 1 to the left for windage and squeezed the trigger, the first bunny just "fell over", the second just sat there, didnt know what hit it's mate or where it came from!

It then got it's wits about it and ran another 5-6m over, I took a few steps closer keeping the dim light on it and managed to get to a fencepost. The distance looked the same so I applied the same as before and squeezed..... this one hit with a THUD and I watched as the bunny done a backflip and landed solid on the ground but it was still twitching!

I quickly ran over, grabbed it and stretched it's neck. The distance either must have been further than I first thought or the wind prevailed dropping the pellet low and had hit it square in the chest.

This was getting silly now trying to hunt in this wind, just as I was about to radio wor kid he radioed me....."This wind is getting daft now mate" he said..."Wanna call it a night??"

I told him what had just happened and rather than plod through it and risk injuring any others we done the sensible thing and we headed back to the pickup and then for home.

Wor kid had the same trouble as me in the fields and never got close to one but plenty time to go back and get them rather than risk injured and suffering quarry!

Here's my bag.....
