Sorry, but that's standard practice for a lot of pest control companies, or used to be. The last thing you want to do is to put yourself at risk of being bitten by handling the little critters, and handling/moving them around causes more stress than drowning. However the law says that it's illegal to stab, beat or drown any wild animal, so it's a no-no.

 

It doesn't affect those legitimately hunting squirrels for pest control purposes. An air rifle pellet, well delivered, is about the most human death you could hope for. Drowning is not a legal method of killing them, shooting with an air rifle is!

 

As for the RSPCA, I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them! They are not interested in conservation, or sensible management of pests. As far as they are concerned, animals have more rights than humans! They're not interested in any animal that's not cute and fluffy. They are really only interested in making more money. Fluffy animals garner more donations than non-cute ones!

Most people would never consider having a gun in the house, it seems so natural to us but most people don't understand guns and are frightened of them.

 

What's not made clear here is how they found out about it in the first place.

 

The suggestion that you should take a trapped wild animal to a vet to have it put down is frankly ludicrous! Not withstanding the cost, keeping a wild animal in a cage trap for the trip to the vet, which could be quite a long time, and forcing it to be in close proximity to humans all that time, is more cruel than a fairly quick death by drowning. The guy is frankly talking out of his arse!

I totally agree, its gotta be better than causing the stress of being shunted around in a cage. Although it is surely better to have a pistol or rifle to shoot it with.

But you can only do it the once, so if by any chance it moved and was just clipped, you can't do it again because then the 1st time would have been cruel and torturous.

Its funny how they legislators work aint it?

Suppose he was taking it to the vet and somehow it got out of the cage then when he opened the boot or car door, the thing escaped. He would then be liable to punishment under our laws for allowing the release/escape of a non native pest species that would cost him a fortune and possibly an stretch in a cell

 

Some times, we the British Public just can't win can we?

sorry guys im with matt on this one drowning is not humane it can take up to a couple minutes for death to occur ,,,, what the guys should of done it get a professional in to do the job there is to many have a go pest technicians and it nearly always ends in a bad story ....

thats probabley what they would exspect you to do.. like and i quote, "squizzer proof your garden," how the frickin hell are you ment to do that. a near on if not compleatly impossiable task. the muppets.

 

just me but if id hit it once and it wasent dead there would be no way on earth that i would stop at that, it would get another twice as hard as soon as possiable to stop any further suffering,as when things like that happen it dont half pull on my gilt strings.

Yes it was cruel the way he killed it.But £1.500 fine .Thats a bit heavy.Is stupidity also against the law now.Before the ban i gave a few donations to the RSPCA.Now i would,ant give them the time of day.As for there buddies the SSPCA A bigger bunch of stormtroopers you,ll never meet.That lot should be wearing jackboots and brown shirts.And how in gods name do you squirrel proof a garden.
