hi does any one on this site have an opinion on shooting hares with an air rifle? :whistling:

only kiddin :gunsmilie:

I haven't given mine ,just quoted the guidelines, and recommendations ,of the BASC.Which was in response to Festa saying "hares are much easier to shoot with an air rifle than rabbits",and,"the skull on a hare is much thinner than the skull on a rabbit, making it much easier to kill".

I think you need a longer spoon .

Damn! Arse and feck it!!!! Missed that one!!!

Really though, what do you think about an airgun's use to shoot hares. I've shot many over the years with them and I've had no more problems shooting hares than I have rabbits. A well placed shot in the noggin does the job just fine.

I agree that body wise, they're a good bit bigger than a rabbit but their head's not....

Cheers.

I have only ever shot two with Air Rifle's Andy! one a few days ago in .177 and one a few years back with a Webley Vulcan springer .22, both bit the dust pretty sharpish when hit in the swede .

both guns running not far off the 12ft/lbs limit...

I've got to be honest, most of the hares I shot were when I had my RWS52 on ticket years back that made a little over 30 ft-lb's. It was on a farm near York and the land was very flat and open with very little cover, so a little extra range that the gun allowed was very useful...

That said, when I let my FAC go and replaced the 52 with a .177 HW90, I still took plenty of hares with it, just at shorter ranges.

I remember reading a old book on shotgun marksmanship by Percy stanbury! don't quote me on this as it was a long time ago I read it but I'm sure he mentioned that game birds useing game loads only needed around 2ft/lbs in the swede to stop/kill them :hmm:, perhaps someone else who has read the book can put me right! I'm sure I'm not far away as to what he quoted...

Its interesting if you take the thickness of the skull of a Rabbit/Hare and consider what ft/lbs energy would be expected to kill them cleanly......
