How long will a dog run?

Got home from work and thought I would take the dog for a stroll around the feilds where I live. Its a short walk, normally takes about 20 mins just enough for the dog to stretch his legs. There is never anything about apart from tonight, I was looking over a wall as I saw something move and there was 4 big ears really close. The wind was blowing a gale and they were oblivious to me. I took a few moments to admire them as I have never got so close to one with out startling it. Next thing I know the dogs over the wall and off, 'f**k' I thought as we are not meant to be in that field, it was well out of his sight but he must of got a wif and in the blink of an eye he was gone over a hill and out of sight. Im well aware of the legality of the situation but what I was really worried about is that my little dog has put them up before but is not fast enough to catch em so I was worried where he might end up and just how long he would be chasing the bloody thing for. I finally found him a few fields over chasing it in bloody circles, called his name and it broke his focus enough for the big ears to take another line and shoot in to dense bushes. Called the dog over which he did reluctantly as he was charged right up and clearly tired. Walked back to where we were meant to be and f**k me another one jumps out in front of us. The dog must of been at it for about 5 mins when an escape under a gate and over a wall brought it to an end. Whilst I was amazed at how my dog was turning and was so often only a foot away from it I was glad it was over for legal reasons.

Now my questions are A) I know it illegal to catch em but when your out walking and they jump out what the hell are you supposed to do ? My dogs getting fitter and faster so its a bit of a worry as Im sure he will have one soon.

How long can they run for before its dangerous? I know thats a broad question but It worries me because I know he wont give in.

C) Does any one else have there dogs disappear over distances and panic? or am I just being a poof.

well dont really care what you get up to the bedroom lol

as im aware you have to do everything in your power to stop the chase.ie shouting chasing after it they would prob argue.although if your old or got a bad leg how your supposed to do that is beyond me.or even actually stopping a sight hound for that matter.as for the pups great escape.well it will be fine mate stop worrying.

It's called tough luck, at the end of the day that wasn't your intention was it? So it's a hard call to prove, intent is hard to prove. At the end of the day, we can't smother our dogs, we dont know whats about to run or fly off in front of us. Maybe when you saw the hare's, you should of leashed your dog up? Or even walk where there are no hare's? Ok the latter in my area would be silly, my dogs wouldn't be able to run at all.....

 

Running, it depends on how fit you dog is and the ground it is covereing, this time of year alot of stubble and even plough. Some dogs have too much heart and will grind themselves down without even thinking. You say your dog was running for 5 minutes? Thats a long time after a hare, so he must be a little fit eh!

 

Yes, mine have gone 2,3,4, fields away, that's their instinct to chase and catch. No your not a poof at all, what made you think that??

Where i live, i would need to keep my dogs on a lead 100% of the time to stop them flushing and chasing game . . . . . . i don't and they do . . . . I'm lucky that in a farming community no one bats an eye lid, its a way of life, its what dogs do . . . thats the general feeling here.

 

I do however watch the lurcher in summer as its easy for them to over exert themselves and cause serious injury, even death in the heat.

 

Oh and the running a few fields away . . . . . don't worry, my terrier normally leaves the group on our morning walk and returns around tea time!

I stupidly did not take the lead with me as we never see anything here but it would have saved the second chase, wont be making that mistake again. It def felt like a good five mins and he was propper beat after, I had to carry him home, he is out cold right now but thats why I was asking about how long they will run. As far as being a poof goes I was most def running around like one lol.

My 1-yr old may be unusual, as if I whistle him and walk off (decisively mind, no looking back!), he'll always follow.

Might take a field or 2, but he seems to bottle it in the end.

Anyone else do this?

till they drop a bloke i knew years ago had 15 rabs and 3 hares he was on his way home and had 1 last course on a hare and the dog dropped ded its heart was bust

I took Ossie with me hill walking earlier this year to Edale. We were near the top of Grindsbrook clough when he put up a white Hare, first white one i'd ever seen. He chased it up and onto Kinder plateau while i struggled to chase after him. There was very low cloud and still snow on the ground. He got to the edge, turned around to look at me and buggered off. He'd gone for a good 10/15 minutes. I'm whistling him like i always do. Shouting him. Well 6 long blasts of the whistle over 1 minute is the walking distress signal. So i'm thinking any minute someone is going to come after me asking if i'm alright, what will i tell Mrs A when i get home without him. So on, so on. As i'm just getting to the top edge of the plateau, up pops Ossie as if nothings happened. Feck was i glad to see him. He was soaking wet and knackered, but he'd come back. Don't know if he got the Hare though.
