BenBhoy 4,706
hey fellas. as some of you may know i been after a new dog and have been trying to get a rescue one, give it a second chance etc (not,as some twat PM'd me cos it's free, you still have to pay for a rescue dog, often more than you would from a private dealer). after much searching found the perfect wee thing, staff x whippet, 6 months, absolutely stunning. took my terrier to meet her at resuce centre, both got on really well, put my name down, sorted. get the all clear from dog warden, paperwork signed. they take the pup to vets before rehoming to give boosters and vaccine just in case. anyway, she had a reaction to one of the vaccines as she'd not been given a set when she was a tiny pup, like she should have been, had a bad reaction and didn't make it. they had to put her down. all cos some twats couldn't be arsed to give a pup the health care and decent start in life that it deserved. gutted. Guest chook
poor pup, sounds like it had a Anaphylactic reaction Would just like to add though - it could have happened anytime, vaccine reactions are becoming more commen, even in pups/dogs that have had the best start in life, a friend of mine lost their pup after it had its first shot. BenBhoy 4,706
cheers guys & gals, was surprised at how gutted i was actually, i genuinely think she could have been a great dog, on rabbit at least, and a loving dog too. i'm gonna keep looking though for a dog in this way though, i do believe if rescued young enough then not only will pup get a good life here but will be able to work. i'll keep updated. chook - do you know why these reactions are becoming more often? brunty29cdo 5
youve got me a bit worried now,my pup having first jab on tuesday? id be devastated if anything happend... whats the chances and is it worth it? Quote Link to post
BenBhoy 4,706
pups first ever jab? how old? then yeah absolutely. thats what went wrong with this wee un i was gonna have, no one had given her jabs when she was tiny pup. supposed to have two by time about 10 weeks i think, she'd had none, so virus was already in her, your pup should be clean as a whistle still, deffo vacccinate. http://www.dogs.co.uk/content/dogcare/vaccinations.html Edited September 11, 2010 by BenBhoy Quote Link to post
Guest chook
God knows why more dogs are reacting - same as a human realy reacting to a bee sting, it happens, more dogs react to the killed vaccine than the live one though, you have to remember your putting chemicals in to there bodys, with the killed one theres more chemicals added to it, and more of the virus your protecting them from. If there gona react - then age of being vaccanated does not matter, theres a high chance she would have reacted if she had - had the vaccine at 8 weeks, reactions dont change with age, although over vaccanating can cause reactions aswell, so a dog can go from being fine with the vaccine to reacting. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2115&aid=962 I dont think lots of people are aware of just how many dogs react to the drugs we give them, even simple AB's can cause a severe reaction, but yet vets throw AB's at every little ailment. My brothers dog 48 hours after being given AB's pearl Quote Link to post
billy bronk 76
sorry to hear pal,you can get them jabed for less the £30 at the vets Quote Link to post

fresh earth 47
Sorry to hear bud she would have turned out alrite still a pup. Would have thought they would have started the pup with its 1st injections anyway as they wouldnt have know whether it had been down or not so why give a booster for a jag they couldnt be sure she had. Guest Buttermilk
any idea what brand of vaccine they used? to date the only vaccines iv ever had trouble with was EURIAN. good luck with finding the right dog and all the best for the future. So sorry to hear that. And hope you soon find another dog to join your family. Strangely, our 14 week old pup had a bad reaction to her first vaccine and that was Eurian. She was quite ill, but is fine now. She had her second jab 10 days ago and although a bit off-colour for 24 hrs,she didn't have the same bad reaction again. Interesting thread. Quote Link to post
shepp 2,285
Happened to a guy i know, his collie went in for it's boosters and died. It was an agility dog and he spent countless hours training it, it was his pet too. Quote Link to post
