BooMster 11
Lol, you can't fully judge a dogs performance soley on the bag.. You have to be there to see if its a good dog or not as every place is different.. For instance, Put the season your in young ones, you will bag up on them. And what about how shy the rabbits are, Ground your walking, Weather on the night, How many rabbits on the land and so on. I'd never judge a dog without seing it on the night tbh. genuine 81
I'm no numbers man, but as said numbers doesn't tell you if a dogs good or not,its all about the land and whats there to run,i wouldn't judge a dog until i had seen it for myself! Quote Link to post
iceman001979 1,316
I think alot more rabbits get caught in fields where there is sheep wire fences where rabbit bounces off the wire in a dark night. Rabbits that live in hedges are lot harder your dog as be on from till cacth big numbers because yea dont really get second chace with them,IMOA Quote Link to post
wild rover 548
we have had topics on the most popular cross, lets here about those that are actually performing well. how many of you run dogs that have done the 30+ bag of rabbits single handed in one night? how many times as that dog achieved that size bag? what cross is the dog? This sometimes depends on the terrain and the rabbit population, taking 30+ rabbits in certain areas on the lamp does not take an exceptional dog. A few years ago in the borders of Scotland the rabbit population was teeming, less than 30 rabbits on the lamp was considered poor, purely down to the volume of rabbits, some as green as grass squatted so the percentage of large runs was reduced, many never bolted for cover when the lamp was shone over them, over time they did become lamp shy and make it more difficult. Three of us used to go up and ferret and mooch 40-50 through the day, go to a transport cafe for something to eat then lamp 100+ and still be home early, those days are long gone, one dog used to take 50 regular (not mine) best was 60+ single handed. Now that dog I would consider exceptional because it would take 40-50 every night and even that when rabbits werent so numerous. Compare that to some one living down south where the population wasnt as great, they may only run 10-15 a night and catch 7or 8 but the terrain was harder and volume just isnt there. I have never been a numbers person but as pest control had to reduce or lose the permission, now I am happy ferreting 20 or the dogs mooching 10-15, its about enjoying the dogs and myself, whatever your dog catches day or night and you are happy with what it does then, you have a great dog and mate. All the best WR. Quote Link to post
