That,s right mate, mating merle to merle give you 25% on average of pups with a very high risk of eye and hear defects.Mike.
mantha 2
thanks mate,is there risk of this happening when you breed any merle with other coulour dogs?
bobslurchers 1
its to do with genetics, mearle problems only happen with mearle x mearle. as the pups need the "mearle" gene from both parents to have problems
poacher3161 1,766
It was a well known fact in pedigree dogs that carry the merl gene that problems could arise [bANNED TEXT] bred together for the life of me i could never understand why anybody would want to put this coulour into lurchers knowing the problems two merle lurchers could create if bred together then again the unusual coulour sold 100rds of pups for britans number 1 puppy farmer

Guest chook
Theres nothing wrong with breeding from merles, its only when you breed two "pure bred" merles together, that it can cause lethal whites. http://www.lethalwhites.com/genetics.html http://lethalwhitesuk.webs.com/information.htm Canine coat color is determined by the expression of a specific combination of genes. While there is more than 99% DNA sequence similarity between dogs, variations in DNA sequence do occur in a small number of genes. Different forms of the same gene are called alleles. Dogs can have two identical or two different alleles for a particular gene. If both alleles are identical, then the dog is said to be homozygous at that gene; if both alleles are different, then the dog is said to be heterozygous at that gene. CarraghsGem 92
there is also a colour known as ee red in collies. its a phantom merle (golden colour) rare enough over here in purebreds but its still about. its genetically the same as merle. and cannot be bred to merle. toby1066 413
im sure miss lurcher bitch an a few others have bred a good few merle to merle between them an have never had any porblems only a puppy peddler would want to breed merle x merle
littlefish 589
I think what apear to be normal solid coloured dogs can also carry the merle gene, so unless you know history of dog and bitch for certain, breeding merles carry the risk of eye/hearing defects. Although I do think they are handsome critters!
CarraghsGem 92
for those who do not know what an australian red/ ee red border collie is heres a pic.... it is impossible to see merle in this colour as it is what is known as a "phantom merle" it has the fatal merle gene and cannot be mated to a merle. it is rare but is in the uk as well as all over europe. collie/grey 238
Merle to merle for me is an absolute no no! Of course people have done it without knowing what the risks are without any problems but sheer luck would have been on their sides, far too risky to try it and hope for a good outcome imo.
