A few snares out.

Recommended Posts

Farmer asked me to thin a few hares out,so up to the field with a few peg snares and fence snares, found some cracking runs.Set some snares at the top of the hill then walked down the bottom of the hill to set some more as i was walking down i pushed a hare out of the long grass watched it run up the hill then heard it squealing walked back up the hill and it was in one of my snares :boogie: only been set 10 mins before  .

Went back just as it was getting dark to check them and had another 3 hares :boogie: .

Out of interest why do they need thinning out . . . . i wasn't aware that hares caused much damage???

Its because they eat, and where you have land where a lot of hares are eating, you have to thin them out.

You have to have a hell of a lot of hares for them to be damaging crops etc as their feeding pattern is different to rabbits. Whereas rabbits will munch forward in a line clearing land, hares pick at odd bits here and there. I'd be really surprised if those couple were doing that much damage, it was probably the rabbits. The only reason people seem to really have for getting rid of the hares out of season, is so that they don't get folk with dogs coming on their land in the winter.

It appears you have asked a question, then quickly provided an answer :hmm: The man was asked to thin out the hares ,and this is what he as started to do,the fact that he snared four so quickly , tells me, that there dos seem to be good numbers on that land ,and they need thinning out :good:
