Buying a car with no V5?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what you all think?

I am going to have a look at a car tomorrow in Birmingham and was hoping to buy it if its a good one and drive it back. But found out this afternoon that the garage has no V5 for it.

They say it isnt a problem and would fill in a V62 form in my name, I have done a HPI check and everything is clear but I cant get the HPI check guarantee without the serial number of the V5 :wallbash: .

I asked why they didnt have the V5 in their posession and they said that they had bought the car from a finance company that had reposessed it?? If it has been reposessed should that not have shown up on the HPI check?

They say everything is above board and legitimate, and in all fairness they do seem quite a big set up. They have for sale approx 150 cars.

Just want to know other peoples opinions on whether you think I should do the deal or not. Im a bit worried about paying for the car (cash) then finding out someone still owns the car :hmm:

Thanks in advance

Kyle

I'd have thought it was their duty to apply for a new V5 themselves before they sold the car. :hmm:

It might well be legal and above board, but it doesn't sound like a proper way to go about running a business to me.

it is quite common in a repo for them not to have the v5 but saying that it could go bad.

how are you paying? might be worth getting on a credit card as you are covered if the worse happens (just pay the balance off at the end of the month)

they wont apply for one as its another name on the log book [reducing value] just send of for one

The bloke I spoke to did say they didnt want to apply for it in their name as it would add another owner on the log book.

I have done it pal on 2 occasions, go for it there will be nothing to worry about.

In the long run it will take 4-6 weeks for the V5 to get processed and return in your name so make sure it has a couple of months T&T as you will not be able to get this done without the V5 and have to register it SORN.

If you do buy the veichle and do get stopped just explain the sittuation and everything will be ok.

This is coming from first hand expierience so i hope this helps.

Cheers, Luke.

Went to see the car but didnt buy it afterall, 3 years old and has had a full respray. A bad one at that :o . Must have had accident damage or been vandalised at some point but nothing showed up on the HPI check.

Nevermind, I will keep looking

Thanks for the replies
