Nathan_R 10
This is my first write up, so let’s see how it goes...! I had spent a very frustrating week shut up in the office at work, and desperately trying to write up another Open University assignment at home all week long, so it was with great relief that I finally found time to blow the cobwebs off of my HW97K and head out for a quick shooting session. I’m very fortunate to have my own land for shooting on, some of which is absolutely plagued by rabbits, but Davyt63 and myself are determined not to let them have it all their own way! As soon as I pulled in to the yard I spotted a lone rabbit happily munching away on the lawn – there is often one sat there, but even the most stealthy of vehicles usually scare them away. Due to the small (I hope!) hole which appeared in my exhaust pipe yesterday, my car certainly did not fit into the Stealthy end of the spectrum so I could hardly believe my luck when, after parking behind a wall, I peered over to see the rabbit sitting up on it’s hind legs wondering what all the noise was about. As quietly as I possibly could I grabbed my rifle, loaded it, and made my way towards the end of the wall and eyed my prey. It was now settled back down happily feeding which gave me plenty of time to estimate the range. My initial estimation using the Mk 1 Eyeball was perhaps a little over 40yds – It’s still sat still though, I still have time to check it through the scope. I measured the rabbit in the mil-dots and cross referenced this with my ranging chart. The result: 30 yards. “30 yards?? Really?? It looks much further!†The grass was fairly long for a lawn, and although I had a clear sight of the rabbit the bottom half of it’s head was obscured from sight. I gave a quiet whistle to get my new found friends attention – it immediately lifted it’s head and eyed me up suspiciously. My scope is zeroed for 30 yds, and the garden is well sheltered from the wind, so holding the cross hairs directly over my aiming point, I slowly increased the trigger pressure and sent a .22 JSB Exact hurtling towards my target. The satisfying “Thwack†was followed by the equally satisfying drop and I had another bunny making it’s way towards my freezer. As luck would have it, the rabbit was heavily pregnant so she also provided a very welcome treat for my ferrets. Out of interest I paced the distance from my position to where the rabbit was and it came out as 29 yards. I couldn’t believe how wrong my initial estimation was! Fortunately I trusted my system over my instinct, and I’ll put the miscalculation down as a learning experience! 3 Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Pacing out is only a guide, a rangefinder is the easiest way to work out the distance, good shooting by the way, and for your first written post, have a slut piont Quote Link to post
