mjr88 50
Hi all I'm in the process of filling in an application form to join a local shooting club and on the form it states that i need 2 referees of good standing that will vouch for me. The only 2 that come to mind are , doctor & employer. Any more suggestions will be greatly appreciated , John Edited May 5, 2010 by mjr88 Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
Of good standing just means someone who hasn't been in trouble with the police generally. They prefer that it's not a doctor, unless they are also a personal friend. The FEO's I've spoken to look for people who actually know you, rather than professional people. For the SGC you need someone "of a certain standing" such as a JP, a doctor or other professional person, but for the FAC that's not the stipulation. A doctor would probably want paying to sign, which would rule them out straight away. Your employer would only be relevant if they know you personally. For a club I think one of the signatories/referees has to be the club secretary or a club officer. Go along to the club and speak to them, they'll know what the rules are! Quote Link to post
Deker 3,491
I'm sure you have read it but not relations, RFD, Police etc and they must have known you for a minimum of 2 years. It's always good if you can get a FAC/SGC holder to be a refereee, not much arguement they are acceptable and good standing!! Quote Link to post

AzMaN 0
our club uses 2 full members to sign its new members forms, usualy after a good chat with the new person/people. Then they go through the minimum of 3 month probabation for which they are always supivised, and then once deamed safe and undergon our in-club training course, they are moved up to full members. Deker 3,491
It seems I may have got a bit mixed up here, are you asking about forms to join a rifle club, or FAC application forms?? Quote Link to post

mjr88 50
It seems I may have got a bit mixed up here, are you asking about forms to join a rifle club, or FAC application forms?? On the application form to join the club it states that i need 2 people to sponsor me , both of good standing , an employer, solicitor etc. I was just wondering if good standing means that they have never been in trouble with the police and that i can use the 2 referees that i did when i applied for my FAC ( GOOD FRIENDS ) who are not professional people John Edited May 7, 2010 by mjr88 Quote Link to post

I would say that if the police find someone acceptable then the club shouldn't argue too much, but it's their rules and there's no point second guessing them, just ask! Quote Link to post

There are no statutory rules on this and clubs don't even need to take references from anyone if they don't want to. Personally, I'd take "good standing" as being fairly wide inmeaning in this case. Who is to say that any particuar person is not of good standing? J. Quote Link to post
