ghillie suit outing, white eye and one for phantom.....

Recommended Posts

hi everyone,

well i got my ghillie suit through the other day... been itching to give it a go, weather this weekend was rubbish but i thought i'd have a little wonder after work today....

here's an internet pic of it...

first impressions on the ghillie suite is very good, there are a good array of colours and is a 4 piece with gun accessory, however as i found out in the field just my silhouette was enough to scare the bunny's even up wind of them a not making a noise!!? plus it got tangled on just about everything!! honestly.... on the side of my range finder i have a little bit of velcro and im not joking it must of got snagged 20 times... but i guess its just a case of me getting used to it!!

after a good testing session the other day with the bisley magnum pellets i decided to give them a go out in the field... was a break from the normal crossman premier's (accupells)

ANYWAY... had a walk down a hedge line and spotted 2 bunnies... as i got closer one bolted but the other just stayed there.... had a look through the scope and it 'looked' like it was a mixy rabbit so lasered it at 37m and took the shot...

turned out it was just blind in one eye.... the eye facing me!! unlucky day for bugs...

so seeing as there was a good 15 rabbits along the hedge line before the took the shot i decided to lay up in the middle of the field facing the hedge row and test out the effectiveness of a static ghillie suit.. wasnt long before a youngen popped out.. laser'd at 36m and another one... okay ghille suit 1, blind sheer luck 1.....

left youngen where it was and took a little mosey further down the paddock, quickly froze and slowly hit the deck, saw a rabbit out but it was a long shot and i was in the middle of the field!! okay i had a couple of accupells in my bag so layed up laser'd at 54m.. accupell in the barrel couple of mildot hold over as im zero'd with accupells @40m and whack!!!!

my second best ever shot!! was so happy!! was happy with just the 3 really for 2 hours up the field....

DSC00235.jpg?t=1273007282

even got to see a european honey buzzard (seems to be a family in canterbury area) and got a pic of it with my camcorder

the one on the left is a pic i found on the net as a search to match it and on the right is a still from my camcorder..

buzzard.png?t=1273007100

so i started to gut the rabbits and a cheecky one decided to run out of the hedge infront of me and freeze.... VERY slowly i set myself up with another bisley magnum, approz 30m and wham... another one!!

4 seems to be my lucky number at the moment!!??

GRAPHIC CONTENT COMMING UP.....(aaron turn away)

on gutting the final female rabbit i decided (mr phantoms one shot 4 kills) if she was pregnant as she was carring alot of fat (much more than the males and young female) so could you please confirm if there are mr phantom??

Hi Alex,

My best was one shot 6 kills

But yep, your Doe was carrying 6 embrio's so your looking at one shot 7 kills :clapper:

Any advances on that anyone?

The blind bunny, looks like a catteract, was the other eye similar? If not this was likely caused by a scrap with another buck.

the other eye was fine and it looked like it had warn the fur around the eye after maybe the damage was done to it maybe??

wow.... one shot 7 kills is a real find aye? they wern't as developed as yours the other day though... do you think they loose a few on the way?? what is a 'normal' number of babies born per rabbit per season?

Hey buddy

From Wikipedia

"The gestation cycle for a rabbit averages 31 days, although it can vary anywhere between 29 and 35 days. Litter sizes generally range between two to twelve rabbits. The young are born in a nesting burrow dug by the female, which she returns to once a day for four weeks in order for them to suckle.[11] The rabbit's reproductive abilities were the inspiration for the phrase "breeding like rabbits". They can reproduce from 3–4 months of age. They can produce 4-7 litters of offspring per year, a mature female can be pregnant continuously for 6–8 months. One single pair of mature rabbits are able to produce 30-40 offspring per year."

Now dont forget that each of those 30-40 can also do the same and each one of those etc.....

Work that one out, thats why bunnies are on the increase again in the UK :D

Well done Alex, seven in one shot  I think the buzzard you have on the right may be a Common Buzzard, but I stand to be corrected, If it is a Honey Buzzard then well done on the footage because they are very rare ;)

well to be honest mr stealthy i would be happy with just seeing a buzzard... there are MASSIVE arnt they!? easily a 1.5m wing span! i searched for ages for a pic that showed it like my still of the vid clip had it. the colour markings and that seem identical just that the still is a bit dark (had to increase the brightness to near max on photoshop!!) i have emailed RSPB and waiting to hear from them...

I hope it is a Honey Buzzard, most of the breeding sites are top secret in Britain due to egg collectors and bird theives

On my patch the Common Buzzards follow me when I'm out with the ferrets or the dogs, because they know there will be the paunchings from rabbits, or if I know they will come down I will leave them a rabbit ;)
