I am way too helpful for my own good at times

 

A couple of days ago a nieghbour popped round asking if I could have a look at her PC for her.

 

Sure I said, I went across and saw that she was running McAfee AV (I stopped using his av software when he spent time in a federal penitentiary for writing Viruses that his software would be the first to detect them)

 

Anyhow I went through the usual, well I tried. The problem was that the machine could not connect to the net with IE. Every time IE opened, it closed. So I took my U3 drive round and ran Firefox and Thunderbird. Both programs remained open, but could not connect to the net.

 

I then tried to run her AV software, as soon as it opened, it closed! So I figured a system restore to the previous week would be in order. As soon as I tried to run it, I got an error message saying "System Restore Can Not protect your PC!" WTF?

I've never seen that before in all the years I've worked in IT

 

Came to the conclusion that the restore had been disabled by whatever nasty there was on her system

 

Anyways spent over 2 hours trying everything I could think of including safe mode etc, nowt was working

 

Got p!ssed off with it, so left it and spent the night looking for info on the net! Gathering enough information I spent the next evening trying various Ideas suggested on the net.

 

I even ran my U3 AV on her system, which was promptly closed by the nasty. Luckily my U3 remained safe

 

I suggested that she should let me 'Sterilize' her HDD and let me install everything again. Unfortunately she had so much on the system emails, pics of holls, grandkids, personal documents etc etc and when I tried to save all of them to a DVD it would not let me.... :wallbash:

 

Anyway this evening, I decided that it was too much hassle and I was about to tell her to take it to a shop, but be prepared for some serious expense, when I had a brain wave (it was running away from me saying 'So Long Sucker! )

 

Popped across to her house, asked her if she would let me remove her HDD and let me hook it up to my own system via a caddy. That way I could scan it with my AV software as well as Spybot S&D and Malware Bytes.

 

She agreed and within 15 minutes, my AV software was screaming with alert after alert to various infections, mostly low threat stuff, but enough to feck her system to kingdom come.

Now its finished the scan quick scan (only taken nearly three hours) I'm gonna run the other software then start cleaning her drive up a bit.

 

So I've had 3 nights now where I should have been shooting, instead I'm being a Good Boy and speedy lives yet another night

 

Tomorrow, even if its chucking it down, Im going shoooooootinggggggggggg

I know jack about computers, but lucky to have a mate who fixes my FU's.

Although I did fix a printer once......with a lump hammer

mr phantom..... you have WAYYYYYY more patience than me im afraid!! i spent HOURS the other night on a laptop i bought from ebay, was a really old one running win 98, all i wanted it for was to run chairgun pro as i have a powermac and macbook for my day to day stuff, thought i found a BARGIN at £23.95 end bid...... 1 MILLION hours later and i have only got chairgun working once, every other time it comes up with a runtime error 53.... im not designed for patience unless its hunting but even then i can only last 45mins before i need to have a stalk about!! would of been a crap sniper, days of laying up scoping a target before a green light.... na

I think its a trip to morrisons in the morning, for some carnations to lay along his route through the cemy

And I think I'll put a few drops of shootmore on it too

That should slow him down to a "Stop and Gimmie some lead"

 

You watch he'll preferre daffodils and a splash of old spice or brut

ps love the way you handled the printer, I did similar once.

think it was where the expression "Its going through the fecking window soon" originated.

I gave it one more chance to work and it refused then the entire unit went through the window (open)

Luckily there was no one at the back of the building. The BBC model B Micro was a fairly heavy chunk and falling three floors I think it would have hurt a little bit if it had landed on someones noggin

 

I nearly got the sack and I was only 17

Well I didnt get out after all

Didn't sleep last night despite the meds

 

Fell asleep this afternoon for a couple of hours, woke up feeling crap, rain comming down and its blowing a gale, so I'm staying in tonight.

Forcast for tomorrow is dry with sunny spells, but high wind comming from the North I will be shooting directly into it, so I'm not overly worried about drift

 

Alex, Try reinstalling CG I had a runtime error when I first got it (file was corrupt).

 

Davy, is that bait on that hook I see?
