Rifle Choice

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've now joined a club and have started my probationary period, still thinking on the lines of a .308 once the long wait is over.

So far I've been concentrating on either a Winchester model 70 or a Tikka T3, are both good rifles?

Any opinions either way would be greatly appreciated.

Mick.

If you are mainly interested in long range target shooting you should be looking at 6mm br or 6mm ppc. Ignore anything from the previous poster because he doesn't know what he's talking about.

you no say what you shoot ? Why 308 ? maybe not need

Sorry, :wallbash:

Looking at target only at the moment, hoping to go >500 yards eventualy.

.223 upwards is VERY capable of 500 yards...the phrase "looking at target only at the moment......"..... are you looking for a dedicated target rifle or something general purpose for future field work as well?

This will make a lot of difference to the rifle choice!

if you want to go long long range then you want more then a 6mm ppc there the king of bench rest out to 300 yards maybe bit more. after that the br is better.

look on the 6mm br site thats where you want to look for longrange shooting info.

308 will be the cheaper bet. massive range of bullets and rifles. depends on the money you have to spend and what you want.

as for tikka or winchester both top rifles. i have a winchester and like it alot

Hi Deker,

Was kind of keeping my options open to maybe moving on to deer one day, if I would be better with two rifles please jump in and tell me, getting a little confused with calibers etc.

Mick.

On the face of it you would be better with two rifles, but a lot depends on how serious you want to get about target shooting, 3 ft long barrels weighing 12-14lbs are not best suited for strolling around the countryside with usually, and triggers that break when you look at them tend to be a bit iffy for hunting!

Lots of us shoot 500-600 yards commonly on the range, some out to 1000, with our "hunting" tools, we are never going to win any titles that way but you can achieve VERY accetable results, and you may be able to get away with a one gun offering that way!

I have a T3 Varmint 20" in 308, for both deer and targets. Very accurate, only lose about 70fps over my 26" barrel Ruger 308 as well. Not too bad for carrying so long as you have a lightweight moderator and lightweight scope (I do). Probably a good choice and will deal happily with anything out to over 600, will do 1000 at a push but not very well.

Just to add, another poster made a very good comparison with motor bikes. If you want a serious off-road bike you go for a 'crosser or a scrambler. If you want a serious road bike you buy a tourer, sports, whatever. If you want both in one machine you can get a dirt bike. The problem then is that it won't be as good on the road as a gixer or a Duke and it won't match up to a full blown scrambler on the loose stuff.

"A good compromise is a solution which leaves both sides equally dissatisfied."
