Kill spots

Recommended Posts

Ok I'd like some information concerning Rabbits Squirrels Woodies Corvids etc;

Can you kill them by shooting them in the body and at what distance?

With a .22 and .177 Because in some cases a headshot can't be on.

Thanks

hi countrykid

if in some cases you cant get a head shot! then don't take the shot

if so then move to a better position and bingo! with either .177/.22

the chance you take with a body shot,is wounding your quarry.so its always best to get a head shot! when ever you can,if its not possible then bring in your field-craft

taking a heart shot on certain quarry is frowned upon!

but if its me i like a head shot, all the way

the heart of a squirrel or a rabbit is very small and unless you can pinpoint exactly where it is so that the pellet passes throught the heart then your better off going for headshots. to be honest mate, i know zini was doing heart shots but he is a very good marksman and i should imagine he probably disected woodys before hand to find out exactly where the heart is. on any quarry speices the killzone is just behind the eye and with something like a squirrel or a rabbit it wont take long for them to move into a positiojn that you can take a headshot from.

once you've mastered head shots then you can think about heart shots as its not as simple because you have to think about the angle, the pellet type and you need to know exactly where the heart is on your particular quarry and whats in the way ie ribs breastsbone and such :gunsmilie: stick with head shots thats easier and less chance of wounding

Why thank you very much Aaron  your a real gent with that comment mate ;)

Hi Country Kid,

I think that what the lads have already said is just about right for you at this minute buddy.

You sound like you are pretty new to hunting with an air rifle so better stick to the head shots pal.

The reason I say that is because the head on the quarry you shoot is easily visible and quite small, the heart is very small and not visible.

You either hit the head or miss it so either get a kill or the animal runs or fly’s off to be shot another day.

You take a shot at a animal and miss the heart but hit somewhere else the animal will die but it will take some time and the thing will be in distress for a while which is not on.

Seeing an animal run off and die somewhere far away is very distasteful and must be minimised at all times.

I do take heart shots on the odd occasion but I have been shooting a little longer than I think you have been mate.

I have also practiced the skill quite along time over many years to be able to do it humanly now.

I was taught the skill from my Uncle who is a game keeper and a very good shooting teacher.

I was just showing the video to people to say it can be done, but not that it must be done.

Thanks!

Might take a year or more til I can afford one etc; :icon_redface:

I think i need to get my mum to purchase it and then supervise me whilst I use it as i'm 14.

But Rabbits are spreading on my nans land and more warrens are appearing!

If I remember correctly, you don't need to be supervised on private land if you are 14 or over :clapper:

But for the time being if you fancy snaffling a bunny for your tea, get some wire snares out

As above; you don't need to be supervised whilst on private land if 14. BUT you have to be supervised with a gun whilst on public land, this means you have to be, effectively, escorted to your permission by an over 21 year old.

Thanks Davy I might take you up on that sometime!

And Phantom i don't believe in snaring :)

Must admit, I'm not too keen on it myself, although I have used them in the past.

Still have some left, but don't intend to use them unless I am specifically asked to do so by the land owners (and I know full well that the Church won't ask me to use them :) so they will stay in the bag at the back of the shed).

The guy who has the paddock has said I can use them if I deem it nessacerry, but I don't.

I can take more with my guns and I know its lights out instantly with a chunk o lead
