jasper65 6
Ok guys how critical do you think this is to your accuracy? Been doing a fair bit of reading on the subject and its seems its not so Critical with the larger big bore rifles mainly due to the larger Quarry taken with them giving the shooter a larger Kill zone... I suppose from the Air Gunners point of view the quarry has a smaller Kill area! taking a Pigeon or squirrel in the head at 35yds plus regular can be a hit or miss affair if there's a Paralllax Error ? Basically if you're looking for a New scope! do you look for one with a Parallax adjustment or one which is normaly fixed at 100yds? Just a bit of info I got off the net Jasper Parallax is the difference in the angular position of two stationary points relative to each other from different viewing positions. In so far as scopes are concerned, setting the parallax correction on your scope for the target range, eliminates the need for your cheek weld/eye position to be exactly perfect for a precise & repeatable accurate shot placement. You may notice scopes with parallax correction are usually target scopes and/or scopes with magnification of 12X or greater. By & large, most scopes designed for big game hunting (no adjustable objective or "side focus") have the parallax factory corrected for 100 yards, most rimfire scopes are factory corrected for 50 yards. This is a good average for their intended tasks. Parallax adjustment is usually made by turning the objective or by turning a turret on the side of the scope (side focus) to a specific range setting. When using a parallax adjustable scope set for the correct range to a target, the target will be in very sharp focus. Unless the eye is perfectly positioned the result of a shot taken with incorrect parallax setting for the target range is usually a hit left or right of the point of aim. How wide the shot goes is determined by many factors. The farther the target, the more critial the correct parallax setting is. Most shooters aren't good enough/require the exactness of parallax correction and will never know the difference. But for a skilled shooter requiring precision, particularly at longer ranges, a parallax adjustable scope is a virtual necessity... Parallax error increases the further out the target is. For that reason I usually set my adjustable scopes at 300 yards, as most all my shots are taken at that range or closer. If the situation allows I range the target and set the parallax for the exact range, but a 300 yard setting is plenty close out to say, 400 yards Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
Heard of it before, but never given it much thought My scope has an adjustable objective but never needed to alter it. If I miss I miss, if I hit it (more often than not) then its dead Phantom Quote Link to post

davyt63 1,845
hi jasper i use my side parallex on my mtc mamba 3-12x44 when my target is under my zero, and if its way past my zero say 50yd + so the answer for me is yes its critical! as i dont like it when i miss! and also if its a pigeon then backstop has to play apart, cant rely on a branch to stop it in its path but evryone is different! regards davy Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
I have to agree with Davy, I use my parrallex AO all the time. Its not needed if you tend to just shoot at your zero range where your scope will have no parallex, but if you shoot at all ranges from 10 metres out to 50 you will defo need to move your AO or the target isnt in focus and the POI isnt where you think it is. jasper65 6
Cheers Davy/Zini its given me the answers I needed when choseing a decent scope , I noticed this gun sometimes seems way out on shots perhaps shoots a couple of inches to the left, then the next few shots are bang on again! the trouble is I'm finding all sorts of angles shooting these squirrels and perhaps focusing the scope different with my eye! its a shocker when I know the shot felt right only to find the Pellet went to the left or right.... Just out of Interest Lads whats your verdict on the MTC Scopes? I have been looking at scopes for a good while and narrowed it down to a Nikkon Prostaff 3-9x50 <Fixed Parallax> on special offer at Optics Warehouse, or a Mamba 3-12x44 scope with the nice low turrets which I like the sound of.... JackReid 35
Cant give you all the science buddy but I definatley think its a good idea. Also as you get into a position where you think you could be making a shot, you adjust you rparallex and even if you didnt have quarry present itself, it just gets yout thinking about ranges and disatnces a bit more, which can never be bad! festa 206
i use mine all the time as well its a good way to judge the distance to the target if its out of focus turn the AO until its in focus then look at the markers if its over or under your zero you know if you need hold over/under atb gary Quote Link to post
