How do you come across them Dan,Do you hunt them up in cover,or drive round, call them in, the area's are so vast over there its hard to put it into context ,compared to the little lamping fields here.. Dan Edwards 1,134
We hunt them up, we drive around and look for em. I know areas where they are more likely to be so we will walk em out at times. All different strategies. The key is just to be out everyday you can and you can find them, then its all about what you are carryin and if they are up to it or not. Quote Link to post

Would you ever slip a single dog or is it asking too much, what do the yotes weigh in at and with a single dog, would you have to dispatch yourself.. Quote Link to post

steveS.Yorks 161
Hi Dan, A question mate if you dont mind? I know you call these dogs Stag hounds and they have been around for a long time[seen pictures of Custer with his]my question is,do you have to introduce some pure running dog blood occasionally to keep the speed or are they ok just bred Stag to Stag? Theres a school of thought over here that says you need to put greyhound in "now and again" as the Stag hounds have been around longer than any other "Lurcher to Lurcher" breeding i know of maybe you could give an informed opinion? atb steve. Dan Edwards 1,134
There is really no reason to ever add any hotblood greyhound to these dogs. They are not really "lurchers" at all. The predominant blood in them is already greyhound. There may be some deerhound from way back when in them but its mostly just greyhound blood with a dash of this or that throughout the years. There is no reason to ever add hotblood greyhound to dogs if the men that are breeding and raising the dogs are breeding for speed already in order to catch a runaway coyote with a slip between 200 and 400 yards. It does get added here and there but in my opinion should only be done if you see a serious reason to do so and the only reason would be if your dogs are gettin out run. I have been outrun only 2 times this entire season and once was just Sunday and thats only cause my dogs were out of shape from givin them a couple weeks off and then running them hard on Saturday on hard frozen ground and their feet were tender and they couldnt turn with the coyote through the cover they were running him. Had he decided to run out in the open he would have been dead in 200 yards but he was smarter than that. The other time I got outrun I was being silly and tryin to see what I was feeding and dumped that at a ridiculously long distance. Had my male dog not been crippled I dont think he would have got away at all cause his "run up" was absolutely incredible at one time. Quote Link to post
