Hunting Racoon

Recommended Posts

My main Quarry out here with the terriers and lurchers is Racoon, they are a formidable Quarry that are very tough, a good sized boar coon can weigh as much as 25-30lbs and are wicked with their front claws.

I run Russells and Borders and a couple of crossbred Russell/Borders, i like hard dogs mainly but do have a few that bay, the lurchers i have are a line i brought with me from the UK that are whippet/collie/greyhound, i'm now into my 4th Generation of this blood and find them great for the job and well able to do the job as well as being nice dogs around the house and are very Biddable, las t year a got a bigger lurcher she's mixed breeding but alot of deerhound and bull so we'll see how she works out

here are a few pics of a few sow Coons we got earlier this season.

These two were in a crawl space above a little gazebo shed kinda thing beside a frozen lake, i threw the russell up in and could tell there was more than one Coon in their so i threw up the Border/Russell for to take care of the second , after about an hour the first one bolted and the lurcher nailed him , the problem was when the terriers saw the lurcher having all the fun, bailed out of the crawl space to back up the Lurcher, Which was good in a way cos the other one must have moved to a better spot where the dogs could get at him and he backed into a corner, the wood was all rotten so i took the little lightweight axe to it grabbed him and the lurcher and terriers did the rest

Coons can be the same as foxes in a lot of ways, and can be harder in others , it depends where the coon is and the individual, like i said before they're very dexterous with their claws and tend to grab a hold and rake, i'm always careful around water, coons are in their element in water and will quite happily grab a hold of your dog and drown it !!! doesn't matter how hard it is, i've seen this on occasions and have even had them try to drown one of my lurchers !!!

If their ( the coon) near water they will always take the fight to the water , they're nasty little Ba%rds

here's a few pics of some of my Russllespost-45474-126254510855_thumb.jpg
