Nail clippers?

Hello, I brought a dog nail clipper from a pet shop today got home tried to use it and the thing is shit, wants to bend the nail nore than clip it. Its the first time Ive cut their nails myself so I dont want to do it badly with shit clippers.

 

What sort of clippers would you recomend? Ive got tin snips, pliers etc but didnt want to use incase they could do damage etc.

Hi mate.

I have some nail clippers which are over 30 years ago made by Resco.

Got them from a dog show when I had a Gt Dane!

They are brilliant and work on a gullotine system.

Used them for years, obviously!!

You can change the blade no problem at all.

I never liked the guillotene type clippers, found I couldn't see were I was cutting. Have used the clippers in the link below for years on both greyhounds and lurchers and have had no problems.

Have used this sort as well and both 'obscure' the nail at some point.

As they say to each their own. I still go back to the guilotine ones every time.

In any case its always difficult on dogs with dark claws as the quick is hard to see!

Always take care they bleed for England if you get it wrong!

I have also used the resco type for years.Replacement blades are easy to get.I have also a file to tidy up after cutting.Also use trimmex coagulating powder to stop any bleeding.Never seen this until visited greyhound vet.

It doesn't with all dogs mate, some have nails that sprout like mushrooms and it wouldn't matter how much road work you gave them you'd still have to give them a trim now and then.

I am going to try these , the guillotine ones are rubbish on there nails here & i hate cutting them at the best of times as most of them are black

Thanks alot everyone.

 

To be honest the type I got from the pet shop were the guillotine type and I didnt find them any good but they were probs a duff set. Also have read that if you soak the nails first i.e. bathing them then they get alot softer and easier to trim.

Ive been back and got a pair like tote's but havent tried them yet.
