does anyone know the law as it stands today on owning a crossbow and what type of permision you need....verbell or written......would it be the same as my shotgun and firearm permision.......

You cannot shoot any living thing, with either a crossbow, or longbow, as per the wildlife and countryside act 1981 [ i think it was]. So really, all you need is permission to be where ever you are, using it for target shooting.I dont think there are any specific laws relating to crossbows, apart from minimum age for purchase [surprisingly] however, if you were caught in a public place with one, uncased, i would expect being done for an offensive weapon, at the very least.Personally, i would treat it as a firearm, and play it very carefully.

I sell crossbows mate (amongst other things ) there are no laws governing the possession of crossbows apart from the legal age limit, which is 17.

As already said, it is illegal to hunt any quarry in England using one,

do you sell the bolts for the 50lb pistol bows vd??? bought 1 from the midland and lost/broke most the bolts in the same day. its the metal screw tip im after??? could do with another cord for it aswell, mines starting to fray were the bow went over the top of my improvised dart.

When i was a youngster i experimented with crossbows and found them to be quite innaccurate and cumbersome.They cannot compare to a compound bow for accuracy. There is little art in firing a crossbow when compared to a longbow or compound bow. IMHO they are a waste of money.

well that is, as you say your opinion, I supply long bows in recurve and compound, as well as crossbows in recurve and compound, the crossbows from 50lb pistol bows to 180lb full size compound crossbows.

I have lots of happy customers with many repeat sales and upgrade sales, from my experience it comes down to what you prefer, personally I like and have used both types of bow and find that a good quality full size crossbow can be very accurate,

In simple terms It's to do with the string set up, the compound bow uses a pully system to allow more power for the same strength pull.
