if your just doing a bit of vermin control it would have to be the old faithful 22 rimy as rounds are cheap . but if you want a bit of distance then the .17 may be considered but the 22 will be quiter as you can get subsonic rounds. the .17 have muzzle crack as the rounds are supersonic.atb willum

put down for both,.22 for vermin and ground game .17hmr for longer range vermin and ground game plus fox (a lot off forces accept .17hmr for fox) but what ever you put in for make sure you put down moderater for each weapon as these are classed as seperate items.

so if i put down both .22 & .17hmr i suppose they will check permission and tell me what would be suitable for what land. so i could end up having one rifle suiable on one land and one on another or both on one?

You need to clarify fox, my firearms authority South Yorkshire Police frown upon using .17HMR for fox.... I have read many posts on this site about using rimfire for fox but it depends on the local firearms officer.

Let us know how you get on

good luck!

Hi all,

i am looking to apply for my firearms and shotgun license. i am just wondering what would be the best rimfire to put down on the application. i am only looking to be doing abit of vermin control ground game.

i am abit new to this so any advice would be much appreciated

thanks

justin

If you want to kill Rabbits and FOXES put down 22 rimfire Bolt or Semi whichever you prefer for Rabbits, and go for a 222 centre fire for FOXES TRUST me you will need this if you are targeting Foxes on A regular bases, if you are going to do a job use the proper calibre for your Quarry, also remember and put down sound moderators for both rifles along with your application.
