artic 595
I sometimes shake the lamp to get the dogs attention to the beam fixed onto a rabbit. Not all the time the dog can see the rabbit in the beam, espeacially in grass where it isn't so short.
Guest Rod&dog
I do it when the rabbit is close to cover,, find it confuses the rabbit and gives the dog that extra second or so.
Back Stabbath 1
Possibly to get the dogs attention. I don't have lurchers at the moment but I sometimes let my Dobe chase a lamp beam and I do that to get his drive up again if he seems to be getting tired or losing interest
jpnixon 7
when a rabbit or fox(ireland)goes to hit a fence or cover then i shake the lamp sometimes with the change in light they turn out again, not all the time like, never affects the dog.
billy_wizz 2
If the rabbits close to a hedge and you shake it it can sometimes reflect of something and cause the rabbit to pause for a fraction of a second giving the dog an extra chance!
whippet 99 2,613
its suppose to disorentate the quarry, i dont bother if the quarry is running towards the lamp because the closer it gets to the lamp the more it is blinded. try the lamp in your face close range then look away in the dark , you cant focus for a while. kids dont try this at home. Malt 379
I find shaking the lamp helps to knock the rabbit off it's run back to safety by disorientating it. My dog's not the fastest lurcher (top end, he's got plenty of acceleration), and if I can get a rabbit off it's run and loose it's known route back to the cover, he stands a very good chance of catching it because it usually comes back out into the field to try to find it's run again. If I keep the beam on the rabbit without shaking it, the rabbit just flies along it's run and usually hits the cover by the time the dog gets close to it. Not saying it will work on all ground, but it works on ours where the fields are small and the coney are never that far from cover.
