dirtwinger 235
theres always the ones , that kill deer instantly by hitting them hard , knocking them over and they break there neck. The well known "ninja deer dog" technique My dad had a female harris hawk that ninja'd a roe in Scotland a few years ago. Coming down off the hill a roe flushed down a burn and the harris went after it, got kicked off after the first hit then went up above the deer. The hawk came down hitting the deer hard in the head and it fell and broke it's neck! Not bad for a 2lb bird, deer do break there necks when they fall at full tilt more than you might think. But a dog that could make them fall and break their necks every time would be highly unlikely, I'm sure it happens just not very often. Besides since the ban i have heard that dog's have got way smarter, now they shoot them and retrieve them back to you, now thats a hell of a dog! all the best Dirtwinger Quote Link to post
bullmastiff 615
I Must admit, I'd would of prefered to see a dog 'throat' a deer, it would of been less stress on Deer, meat, dog and you (that cry is horrible) All I ever saw before the Ban, were grab and hold dogs. I've never seen (only read about in books) dogs that 'flip' deer, then smoothly move in for the kill (maybe it comes with lots of practice?) They usually seem to crash to the floor in a heap either throwing the dog clear as it tumbles arse over hoof or the dog manages to keep a hold, lifting his front legs up (or stetched out in front), bringing his weight to bare on his teeth and keeping it pinned. Did the 'throat' hold dogs ever miss whilst trying to swap holds and have the deer get away? Back of the leg holds were the worst, they caused massive amounts of damage (and noise) whilst trying to drag a dog behind them, Interesting one I saw once was a pelvis hold (lower jaw between the legs, upper was to the side of the tail) that caused no damage at all, with a subdued deer laying on his side, quietly till the end (I guess I would be too if a dog had my balls in his mouth!) Also several tail holds that rather than tumbling the deer to the ground it would slowly bring them to a stop as the dog applied the brakes, it didn't seem to upset them much???, the dog anchors and the fight doesn't start until a human runs into sight. If it's meat for the table you were after then it didn't matter what hold the dog got, as long as they could keep it anchored until you got there. It's still 15-20lbs of meat in the freezer. If you were selling them then I guess a throat hold would be important? losing a rear leg to the dog everytime would lose a lot of money. Quote Link to post
