Munty

Recommended Posts

I took the munty I shot at an rta a few weeks ago to the Midland to have it measured for a taxidmist friend who wants it mounted as a display on his stall, it made a silver medal, missing gold by 0.1 point-can't get much closer than that! I didn't want it as there was no fair chase and no good memories attached so I took it along with the frozen skin over to his last night, he is a happy chap. Here's me with it cleaned up and the medal at the Midland, I was pleased as althoug it was an rta it shows the genes and habitat are there to produce good animals. :victory: :

Since then I can't stay away from foxes in the mornings, had plenty of singles, a few 2s and a 3 every time i've been out but I don't think all the banging does me any favours with the munties, doesn't seem to bother the roe does though as they seem to know they are to be left, seen loads of them. There are a few fallow bucks that want tidying up and so I thought i'd go to a forgotten corner of an estate that I rarely visit tonight to try for one. I stalked for around 3 miles seeing only more roe does and got to the wood I wanted to be at just before dark, sat on a hedgeline of blackthorn for a few minutes overlooking a big wood and thought it would be soon too dark to take a shot should one present itself. Movement to my right caught my eye and munty buck came out of the thick hedge, into the stubble in front of me and started mooching towards me; at around 30 yds he stopped and stared straight at me so I dropped him on the spot with a low neck shot, I didn't quite realise how good he was until I went to him, he's nearly out of velvet but a very rough measure just now puts him into the bronze category, much more chuffed than I was with the silver and this estate is about 10 miles away from where the silver came from, I've got nearly all of the land inbetween so hopefully there'll be more good things to come from the area.

All was normal on the gralloch and I left him hung in a bush to collect after dark, I met up with the keeper to go and fetch him and dropped on a dog fox in the gateway into the field so we gave him the good news :clapper: .

Further into the field we saw one of the fallow bucks I had been waiting for and next to the carcass hanging up was another munty so plenty left to go at there, it just goes to show the far corners of estates are often worth a look as that's where newcomers make their way in. Here's a couple of pictures of the buck from tonight and another one of another piece of land i've got where the wood was lterally made for stalking, leaving it quiet for a couple of weeks at the moment though for guests  .
