hi just brout a pup and had him a couple of weeks and he has come down with parvo..hes been out of the vets for 2 days now and hes been on a drip and antibiotics..but he is not eating much and when he does he just sicks it back up..can anyone tell me iff they have a special remady..or somthing to build him up fast..as hes lost a great deal of weait..cheers caspa

woking lurchers and parvo .bad luck indeed.if he pulls through mate ,probably best get him a pet home.it USUALLY leaves weeknesses,best of luck bennybhoy

I've never known a pup to survive parvo, but I suppose it all depends on the strain of the virus and the pup's consitition, along with the best the vet's can give him.

 

How old is the pup Caspa?

 

I should think if he does pull through he'll be just fine once he recovers fully.

Don't try to build him up fast,the poor bugger has just spent the last few days chucking up everything and it's stomach don't need stessing anymore.Rice and cooked chicken in little feeds every few hours and i mean little.Don't try to rush it mate and i myself have had dogs come back strong after parvo,although a good few years back but good strong dogs who all died of old age in the end.A good little guide is think of it as wheening all over again and feed simular soft gentle on the stomach type foods,all the best with the dog mate...

after i had one with it i never got rid of it till i moved house, most of the time if a pup was going to get it it would be after they got their first jab. if you do as fireman says you will not go far wrong also fish and plenty of electrolytes if it comes of the drip it will most likely live. What some are saying about them never living after having it is shit.

i know your dog isnt an alano...but dogs can survive it mate, although it is rare.

pups can recover from it had one 20 odd year back parvo was rife at the time any way pup was passing blood ect vet put it on a drip got it home small feeds and glucose it made a full recovery and made a good lamping dog ,that said do no some that recoverd seemed to lack stamina when adult ,makes you think pup with parvo is it worth keeping dont think the odds are good,that said not come across it for donkeys years.

Yes dogs do survive parvo, but for a working lurcher the after effects are not good,

 

I had one who survived, but his constitution was wrecked, his teeth never developed properly, and he eventualy died of a heart attack.

Dogs can suvive parvo verry well, if there given the right treatment at the time,

 

 

over 10 years ago i lost a young dog to parvo, my other dogs came down with it also,

they are now 13 years old, still fit and healthy, and never had a days illness since,

the affects of parvo all depends on how well there system can cope with it,

how well it can fight, alls the vets do is give supportive treatment, its up to the dog to do the rest.

 

feed fish or chicken and rice or sweet potato, cook it till its like mash,

then blend it to a pulp, add some water to it, so its like a soup,

and feed little and often, when dogs havent eaten for a few days

quite often there digestive can not cope with big peices of food,

by making it in to a soup they can digest it better,

i would give some natural probiotic yoghet as well, as they AB's will have knocked the gut out.

There is no special remedy that will build up a Parvo pup fast. The inside of your pups stomach and intestines has a protective mucous lining, and Parvo completely strips that away. It will take a minimum of two weeks for that lining to regenerate and grow back, and during that time your pup need food that is easily digested and easy on his system. If this were my pup, I would offer simple, easily digested foods at first, specifically broths. Homemade beef or chicken broth is good, add a little salt to replenish what he's lost and encourage water consumption. Skim the fat off. Give only small amounts, often. Once he's keeping the broth down well, mix a little soupy overcooked white rice into it. Meat baby food is good. Cooked chicken is also good. Do not offer anything fatty. Your pup probably looks like death warmed over, don't worry about putting weight on him right now, just get him eating. Parvo causes a severe nausea and eating, then feeling sick, can literally put a pup off it's food. Giving a little ginger tea fifteen minutes or so before offering food can help. There are also anti-nausea drugs your vet can give you. You must keep your pup hydrated as well, as long as he's keeping liquids down. I use an electrolyte replacer for babies called Pedialyte, you probably have an equivalent product over there. Mix a little beef broth into it for flavor and most dogs will drink it. If he isn't keeping liquids down he may need IV or subQ hydration. Dehydration also causes nausea.

 

The worst thing you can do is try to stuff a Parvo survivor full of kibble and high fat food. IME this can cause a relapse. The pup's intestines must be allowed to heal before he can go back to anything like a normal diet. For treatment of Parvo I recommend and use Tamiflu (oseltamivir), if the pup is in the early stage of the disease, less than 72 hours since start of symptoms. It will not work in a pup that is already sick enough to need an IV.

Honey is a good thing to mix in with a little warm water as well,plenty of easily digested energy.Keeping it rehydrated is the most important thing and like others have said your dog will look like sh*t mate,all skin and bones but don't worry about that just take it day to day.

about 12 year ago my mate hand a litter of pups they were deerhound/x not to sure about the sire but anyways the pups were 26 /27 tts plus exept one of the pups that got parvo and pulled threw she turned out roughly about 23/24 tts but she still turned out a cracking wee bitch i would try to get baby powder milk is got eveything the pup would need even if its not takeing alot its still a start but diffrent people would prefer diffrent things good luck with your pup mate

like i said i never got rid of parvo till i moved, about half the pups that got it would die . when the new vaccination came out that you could give at 6-7 weeks old it stopped it for a bit but then it was like the disease adaped and they started going down with it again before 6-7 weeks old.

Had to give the pups electrolytes every half hour or so and when they picked up a bit white meat,fish.And only feed small bits at a time as people have said.
