An Afternoons Shooting

Recommended Posts

Went to the farm that I have permission to fly my hawk on yesterday afternoon with the purpose of getting a couple of rabbits for my hawk.

I was using my BSA XL Lightning Tactical with a Hawke Optics 4x32 Sport HD scope. My zero was set at 20m. My ace of the day though was my home made ghillie suit which allowed me to get as close as 20m if not closer, as I wanted to ensure that my shots were humane and accurate.

Well here are the results!

I will be removing the heads of each rabbit prior to feeding to my hawk, as both shots were head shots.

My rifle still needs a bit of tweaking, but it truly is a cracking little rifle! The balance and the comfort allows an incredibly steady aim and the accuracy was very impressive considering how short the actual barrel is!

all the best

Im sure he will, although I must admit I am little nervous about giving them to him...they've both been paunched and I have removed the head of the one I am planning to give him but I am paranoid about him getting lead poisoning. I shall have to give the body a complete examination before feeding I think.

If you are going to feed them to your Hawk i would check properly that there is no shot un the carcuss that is from someone shooting at it and not killing it. I have found shot in rabbits that i was going to feed to my hawk that had been shot with a shotgun in the past.

You should be able to tell if its been shot any were on its body, if you are in doubt, skin it and look for evidence of shooting ;)

Good idea mate. I shall skin it and then feed in smaller pieces :)

Looking at the images full size there aint much chance of the lead going anywhere into the body (especially the top one)

The second bunny that I shot for the table was a very good head shot and when I skin them I take it over the head to see what damage and exactly where the pellet hit.

When I looked it had gone in but I could not find the slug.

The wound tract went clean to the other side of the skull taking out the brain stem.

Someone mentioned they had the same and they found it down its throat! I had already gotten shut of its innards so I couldnt check down there.

I cant say I chewed on any lead though.

Good shooting by the way, love the suit great work and the fact it lets you get that close is brilliant.

good shooting mate, that guille suits looks a bit suspect, you didn't borrow it from the scarecrow? ;)

It works very well :p I actually use it for when I go airsofting, as I play sniper usually. I have been withing 5m of some guys and they didnt see me :p. I took it with me as I wanted to make sure my shape was broken up, and would you believe I was actually able to walk towards a rabbit, stop take aim with the rabbit eating!

The reason i put my comment up is that not everyone that shoots has a good aim and some have miss shots where the rabbit may have been hit by a few pellets from a shotgun and they may still be in the carcuss. its better to be safe than sorry!

Hi mate

I understand what you are saying perfectly. I have skinned the rabbit I am feeding and have cut the body into smaller pieces as he will not eat all that much anyway due to moulting and being overweight in the first place. Thats for your advice all the same!

Kind Regards
