  1. A few months ago i was asked if i was interested in signing up to a new photo agency in the new year. They will sell photos to magazines and private buyers throughout Europe. Last weekend i had an email from the lady in charge asking if i would be interested in providing a portrait shot of a sika stag for the front cover of a Hungarian hunting magazine. It wasnt a particuarly hard task as where i live is crawling with sika deer! However, whenever i dont have the camera i can easily stalk to within 20 yards of them, with the camera a different story! Anyway after a dawn start yesterday i managed to get plenty of shots, including this which i think is the photo i shall send them for the cover.

I have also been asked to provide the photos for the article in the magazine about the deer aswell. Not bad for my first real free lancing job!

Any comments and criticism is very welcome!

  2. I never post in this section as im more into terriers than rifles, but thought this may be of interest to some of you.

Like most on this forum, i grew up shooting with airguns, rifles and shotguns and it was always a dream i had to hunt something in africa (other than the natives). When i was at college i made one single friend and he is now my best mate and im his best man next year at his wedding. Best of all he is from Africa. This year him, his fiance, my girlfriend and I went out to South Africa for a 3 week trip. The best time of my life and cant wait to go back next year.

One day, my friend made a few calls as he has lots of contacts out there and organised a hunt for a warthog. As we were self catering it seems a good idea as it meant we had plenty of meat for days! We arrived at dawn, had a chat with our guide and a few test shots with the .308 rifle i was going to use. The biggest rifle i have used up until this point was a .270 to shoot Sika with here in Dorset. We loaded up and set off into the bush with the Beagle used for tracking.

We saw so much game looking for this hog and finally come across this male with a female. I took the shot and away he ran with one front leg totally smashed. We let the dog track it and found it about 80meters away. He wasnt stood totally broadside but not facing me either so i aimed a little further foward and landed a perfect engine room shot. Upon closer inspection his heart...well, there was nothing left, lungs penetrated, liver smashed and the bullet was just under the skin in his opposite back leg. I kept this as a souvenir along with his tusks.

In the end due to the his size and the fact we were traveling around a lot, we just took one back leg and some lovely steaks and donated the rest of his carcass to feed the captive leapards used for breeding.

One of the best days of my life.

  3. You seem to use the word SHOW a lot more than work?

If you are breeding for preserving them as a working breed then i take it the stud fees are reasonable/free and the pups are cheap? ( By work i obviously mean earth work, no playing with rabbits and rats)

Oh also, the kennel club are a disgrace. The fatc you even mentioned it in the same topic as one referring to 'working' borders tells me all i need to know about your money making exercises.

Guys like the Breeder are what the border terriers need. Honest and experienced digging men that care for little else other than working and breeding quality working dogs.

  4. never seen a good one meself like not bred worker to worker enough

um, is it not enough that its the natural instinct? I mean, crocodiles are bred in captivity but it doesnt stop them eating people given half the chance. Well, i wouldnt cuddle one thats for certain!

Its the breed not the breeder. My jack russell came from non working parents yet shes mustard on rats and bushes as good as as! In fact i bought her off an old dear on a posh housing estate!

Haha 'mustard on rats' . Jesus, i would be worried if any dog wouldnt kill a damn rat!

  5. Bugger me, Poppit Sands. My grandparents used to own a farm in wales and we used to spend the summer there when we were kids just messing aboutg in the farm. The one summer it was actually warm enough to spend a day at the beach, was the same year i dared my brother to jump out of a tree whilst ma and pa where packing the car and he fractured his arm before we left home. I had a great time messing about in the rock pools, whilst he sat on the beach with his arm in plaster haha
