My first offer of 'rent' is a lamb for the freezer and the erection and maintainence of fencing etc.

Generally you find people renting bits like this out cos they havent got the time to keep it nice. If that isn't accepted then I offer £100 per acre per year, dunno what the going rate up there is though..

The most I have paid was £60 per month for 4.5 acres with a barn, but it was teeming with rabbits and pheasants so I never bought meat lol!

That's £160/acre/year. What you growing on that to make a profit?

I wasn't making a profit, I was hanging onto my tiny flock. I had to move, this was the only ground that I could walk to in the snow etc.

I spent years building a pedigree flock and was keeping them somehow! I had to reduce the size somewhat but I kept my best, ate the rest.

But to me it was worth it, I turned it into wild flower meadows, had my fair share of bunnies and birds off it. It was a private haven for me too, I could go there whenever life got too hectic, just me an the dog and me sheep! Had a little caravan tucked away in one corner for when I was lambing, and stayed there loads.

I miss that spot, though I am lucky now that what I have for the flock I get in return for checking the landlords cattle for him when he's working nights.

    Operation flock regeneration begins lol!

  2. I'll probably get jumped on for this but.....

If you are only walking the dog at this moment, and not working it may I suggest that whilst putting other training/corrections in place you use a basket muzzle and a long line on it?

It won't stop the chasing, it won't stop the sheep getting stressed and personally I would be royally fecked off if these were my sheep BUT if I had a dog amongst my sheep that the owner had muzzled and long lined I could at least try to understand that the owner was doing all he could to prevent damage.

Stress can kill em, but a maggoty dog bite on hill sheep is an almost certain killer.

I have no FAC but a local sheep farmer does, and I can assure you he would shoot first then ask questions.

  4. I used to find a lot of what he said interesting and it did make ya stop and think...

Then he rocked up at Glstonbury Tor one afternoon proclaiming he was Jesus and generally terrifying the kids who where up there on a trip with his manic behaviour.

Shame cos if he wasn't mad as a box of frogs people would be more inclined to listen and think about what he has to say...

  5. Personally I would be more concerned about the practice of mulesing in NZ sheep. No requirement for pain relief if carried out before 6 months according to the 2013 regs.

Airy fairy hippy ideals or not, sheep feel pain and you cannot tell me that cutting away a plate sized area of skin around the dock with no anaethesia is not incredibly painful. Throat slitting would be less traumatic IMO.

FFS keep sheep clean and parasite free if you want to avoid the fly.

Sorry for going off topic, but that's my reasons for not buying NZ lamb.

  6. I live out on the Somerset levels and in the last week have gon from 20 + hens to 8 :(

There is a vixen and 4 cubs in the field next door and they make their way on to my ground daily. All hours and don't give a toss about us.I have

tried a trap. but they aint going for it.

Can anyone help me out? I don't have a FAC so can't deal with this myself. My landlord has said if I can get someone he will give permission. the fell who owns the field next door will do likewise.

I can't afford a huge amount, but will gladly pay a bit and let you share my fishing/ferretting perms etc in return.

You can stay over in the spare caravan if you want to try a few evenings and i'll provide food etc.

I do have livestock so would might need to pen them up.

If you think you could help please let me know as I am desperate to keep my hens!

  7. Gets confusing with the good growing conditions we've had this year. I pick common hogweed every day for the rabbits, it's their absolute favourite, but the stuff has grown MASSIVE this year, I find the giant hogweed stinks if you even get near it.

There is one plant of the giant hogweed near me, and everything avoids it. The common stuff i have to fight the cattle and deer for lol!

Worked wonders for his married life eh? I bet his missus don't know about her! Nor do I reckon he'd be ok with her having a decent shag on the side ;)

Be warned though, when finding out he can't keep his cock in his pants we don't all dissolve into heart broken tears....

I pissed in the petrol tank of his motor bike, shot his entire antique porcelain collection, gave his number in reply to certain types of adult adverts then sold my wedding dress for extortionate amounts of Jamesons and had the time of my life!

Plus I changed my name by deed poll rather than divorce the lying b*****d, so he can't just marry the next idiot who falls for his charms!

Were you not heart broken? There is nothing worse than deceit. You must of felt humiliated and degraded.. if you have moved on you would be divorcing with all haste..

Ok I have watched a lot of old Frasure repeats....

Yup, he ripped me to bits, I always said I could cope with anything except lies, but he thought I'd let it pass.

So I slung his sorry arse out. I spent enough on him paying the rent, all the bills working 3 jobs etc, whilst he did bugger all. I ain't paying for a divorce as well. I have moved on, but i am not spending another penny on him. If he wants a divorce he can pay for it. I'll gladly sign the papers. till then i can wait the 2 more years before i can do it without contacting him and only cost about £30 lol!

  11. if there was only a small amount of bait, the cockerels (if they are like mine) may have given the hens the 'treat'. If I give my lot something tasty the cockerels will pick at it and call they hens over then pass it to them without eating any.

  12. Rabbits 7 months, then freezer is empty, dry cat nuts and pigeon when I can get them, how can you feed rabbit this time of year like to see the size of your freezer .If I did like some lads on here kill rabbits this time of year would have very little for the winter.Just cruel killing rabbits this time of year.Very easy to fill freezer with rabbits. One ferreting trip. How do you still have rabbits left from February,Shooting 3\4 rabbits is bull, there is not enough meat on them to feed an army of ferrets.

I breed my own for the table, the dog and the ferts. I feed em on a few pellets and feck loads of weeds. Damn cheap way of getting good meat and compost ;)

  13. Does anyone get the long tailed tits on there feeders? Had a tree creeper here recently

Yep they especially like lard ;) I buy a pack of it. unwrap it and shove it on a spike, they visit a few times a day, and on the hour almost during winter.

  14. Diazepan made mine worse :/

Couldn't leave the house for 3 weeks.

I feel for you mate I really do...

I was put on fluoxetine (prozac) and it really really helped. BUT the doctors have now cocked up my script and I can't get any for a month. HAndy that after taking 40 mg a day for 7 years and being told never to just stop them!

I looked into it and discovered that St Johns wort has almost identical properties as prozac.

I have been taking it now for a week with no prozac (not to be reccommended but what do ya do when you run out and they won't give you any?)

    I am a new woman!

No depressive symptoms, no anxiety and I actually feel!

That might not make sense but on the meds everything was dulled, hardly any emotions etc. Now I can feel! Hurrah!

So anyway, there are several herbs you can use. The St Johns is fab IMO. Skullcap is a really good one for anxiety as is valerian root and taken together will help you get some decent kip without awful dream (thats what they put in the herbal Kalms tabs, and they are really helpful)

Make sure you eat properly and remember that alcohol is a depressive ;)

I used to wonder why I always felt so bad on Tuesdays, till I realised it was from Saturday nights drinking!

I still do have a drink some nights, but I know to expect a downer a few days later, it's not so bad when you know why;)

Most of these herbs you will walk past on a daily basis if you are out mooching. I have valerian and St Johns on my land... just trying to find skullcap now.

If they grow near you you might as well try using em. They taste like shite but then Diazepan wasn't a bundle of laughs either :D

Wish you all the best and if ever you need a friendly ear that understands, get in touch x
