Hi,my name Derek,,i am a friend of peter byrne,he and another guy by the name of Dermot used to hunt with me around meath for years, the last time i seen them was about a year ago,Peter used to be a taxi driver and his mate Dermot still drives a taxi,i had a phone number belonging to pip but its dead,[no answer],i have enquired around to see where this pair have gone but nothing,i put a post on here on any information on the two but nothing,i did get a few replys saying that pip was in hospital but that was it,a member on here told me you might know if the two of them are ok,pip used to tell me

  8. A farm i hunt on regular have a few hares on it,its a bit scarce of bunnys, but a few of us have let out a few pregnant does to give the land a bit of a boost,we havent hunted on it this year at all,but the owner is a real gent,we park out vans in his yard when we go and his good wife makes us tea when we finish out days hunting, but a crowd of travellers hunted his land last year, they left gates open and broke fences, when he confronted them they told him to f**k off and not to mess with them or he would be sorry,so he went back to his house and rang the Garda,[irish police],when they arrived th
  9. Most farmers turn a blind eye to you poaching the odd night on their land,BUT,there are a lot that dont want you near their land and worse of all they dont want dogs upsetting their livelyhoods, for years you could enter any mans land for a hunt, for a dig,a bit of ferretting, and a good nights lamping, and farmers would either leave you to it or tell you politly to go and not come back, but times have changed,a lot hads happened in the last 20 years, you could fall and break a leg on land weather you had permission or not and end up claiming of his insurance and getting a big lump sum,or other thi
  10. If you only have one peice of land to hunt you should look after it,stock it up before the summer months, ferret a few bunnies and put a few doe,s on it and leave them there for a few months,i have different land to hunt all over the country, some is really good,,some is ok and some are totally shite, but i ferret with the lads around April and i take a few doe,s and put them out on the bad land, leave them there till Xmas and then run the lamp over it,you will be surprised to see outcome of your work.
  11. Starting off i would go for a frist cross collie greyhound,a good moocher,a handy dog when out ferretting,a good dog for the lamp,my first lurcher was a collie greyhound my late father got me,a good bitch for someone starting off into the hunting game,
  12. At the end of the day Dusty, its nice to be nice ,but there is only so much you can take,as for the smart comments you get from these members well i put them down to armchair hunters
  13. Well i would,nd loose any sleep over her,i had a run in with a farmer a long time ago, something similar to your story,i was hunting on land i had permission to hunt or shoot on,i was minding my own business hunting away, terriers doing the cover and lurchers on standby, when all of a sudden out bolts a fox on the opposite side of the gorse and away it ran across the fields,i roared at my lurchers and both took off after charlie, they closed on him quick and killed him ,one problem was the field they caught the fox on i hadnt permission on and as my dogs started to retrive the fox this farmer ap
  14. How many breeders out there would admit to litter wastage when breeding lurchers, the collie greyhound is the starting point to breeding a good all round lurcher,i have talked to a few breeders here in Ireland and most wont tell you of all the lurchers and longdogs they have bred how many turned out good,i talked with King from Cavan last year and i asked him of all the dogs he bred how many turned out good running dogs,he told me that 95 per cent of the dogs that he bred were top class runningdogs,[which is a lie for i know people that bought some of his dogs and they were useless,he did breed
  15. You were lucky he didnt kill himself, but he lived to tell the tale,i have a lurcher that was spinning a hare and he had the hare under pressure when the hare decided to head under a 5 bar gate,i could see myself carrying this lurcher home or worse still burying him out on the land he was on top of the hare and i couldnt bare to look so i looked the oppsite way and i heard the gate rattle and when i turned around dreading the worse he was in the next field still coursing,my heart was in my mouth for them few seconds but he went under the gate or over it,i dont know,so he had a lucky escape.
  16. I think every collie had working background in its blood, you could use this collie for the start of your lurcher breeding, its not for me to say that this collie when crossed with a good greyhound are going to produce top class lurchers,as you all know getting a top class all rounder is a chance you take when breeding lurchers,i have a mate that has a small farm up in Dundalk,he has a hill collie, around 24 ins tall,a great cattle and sheep dog, afraid of no farm animal, plenty of gut, takes no nonsense, but when we do a bit of bushing or digging on his land and he tags along with his collie,he col
  17. The RSPCA have either put them out into homes or they have put them to sleep, and they tell you that they were stolen, over here in Ireland the DSPCA do the same thing, they take your dogs off you, then when you go to court and you win your case and go looking to get your dogs back they come up with the excuse that they were stolen from the pound and the have the Garda[irish police] on their side, there was a similar case here in Ireland a few years ago,the DSPCA came into some lads kennels and took all the dogs, this chap fought tooth and nail through the courts to get his dogs back and when he wo
  18. Lovely pack you have there,i am sure you love to hear them in full cry.
  19. Hi,looking for a bit of info on a old man by the name of Pip Byrne,i have know him for around 20 years, used to meet him at gamefairs and he used to call on me every now and again for a dig and the odd course, the last i heard from him was about a year and a half, and havent seen him since,he is a small man,he used to be a taxi driver but had retired from this trade about 5 years now,he was always into his lurchers and terriers, has a great eye for a good dog,i remember him telling me he used to breed working wheaton,s in the late 60,s when badger digging was still legal,i havent heard from him in
  20. Thanks lads, any info would be great, there used to be another guy with him,Dermot was his name,a tall guy, kept a few lurchers and a few terriers,he also drove a taxi, might be his son,any info on any of them would be great.
