  1. So I haven't been hunting with Thioⁿba lately for a couple different reasons, one of which is because I've been to busy and the other is because I have been hoping to get some muskrats to use as starts, to build up Thioⁿba's confidence. She's still super intimidated by muskrats after her last encounter with them, and refuses to catch them. Unfortunately I haven't had any luck getting her some live muskrats to use as starts, so I decided to take Thioⁿba out hunting so we can net our own starter muskrats. After all, it doesn't take much courage to chase a muskrat out of its den. Any mink can do
  2. Yeah, that's what I usually do is make their carry box double as their nest box. That way they naturally want to cache there when out in the field.
  3. A couple of interesting observations from today. First observation is that mink definitely have a naturally strong homing instinct. I've noticed this fact before, but today just reconfirmed it with the two new Mink I'm training. Both mink have only been out of the yard a few times, and yet they both know their own way home, and are quite persistent about wanting to head that direction. Today was only the third walk for the big male, and yet the only way we could really take a walk was for me to carry him a few blocks from home, and then put him down so he can run back. Next observatio
  4. Those are European mink hybrids, not American mink hybrids http://www.ferret.ru/eng/khonorik.html
  5. I was under the same impression. This is the only thing I've ever read that says otherwise. It would be pretty cool if you could cross a stoat and ferret!
  6. I recently learned something rather interesting. Around 40-50 years ago there was a famous Hungarian falconer named György Lelovich who wrote a two part book with the first half of his book entitled "A vadászgörényekről" which means "about ferrets", and the second part "Miniatűr vadászmadarak" which means something to the effect of "Hunting with miniature birds of prey". Here's a link showing his book..... http://konyv.paradicsom.info/konyv/pic/464980galantai.jpg In the ferret portion of his book he wrote about buying some American mink, and attempting to tame American mink for hunti
  7. here's some mink I'm being payed to train for a few guys.
  8. Only young timid mink have any trouble with rock squirrels, but yes, I get your point. I have no idea what a big male mink is capable of. I know a little 1.6 lb female can kill a full grown feral cat with out so much as a scratch, and I know that mink in the wild kill muskrats that double, and even triple their body weight. But I have no idea if a big male ranch mink can handle a nutria. We'll just have to wait and see. Terriers may have trouble dispatching a nutria, but I would be surprised if the five pound male mink I sold to hunt nutria couldn't dispatch a 10-12 lb terrier. I know I've hear
  9. My little sport of hunting game with a trained mink, what I call minkenry, has slowly been spreading around the country, and even the world. Last season (2012-2013) started with me and a couple buddies, who quickly fell out, and once again left only me practicing the sport and one new guy just starting to attempt it with his newly caught mink. This spring started out with me, a local guy, and a guy out in Virginia, but has continued to multiply as the season moves on, instead of shrinking like it did last year. Later that summer, a guy down in Florida bought a very large, aggressive male
  10. I agree with you if all you plan on doing is running rabbits out of holes, and into nets. But you try sticking your ferret down a muskrat hole, and you won't have a ferret very long. I've heard the experiences of a couple guys who've tried that, and it wasn't a pretty thing for the ferrets. Also, I'd like to see your ferret catch a fish, or a 700-800 gram mean fighting ground squirrel, or out climb a rat and catch it in a tree. Ferrets are good at running rabbits out of holes, and they make good pets, but that's about it. A mink will beat it in just about everything else.
  11. I've tamed both adult ranch and adult wild caught mink. The few wild caught mink I've had were actually the easiest to tame. I believe this is because the ranch one's have had negative experiences with humans, where as the wild ones are a clean slate. I'll have to handle a few more wilds before I can say for sure though. But so far, mink from the wild have been considerably easier to tame when compared to the ranch mink.
  12. Really? Did you even see my video? That mink was a full on adult trapped in the wild and that video was filmed just a couple months after I caught her. And here's a video of one my friend caught and tamed in FEBRUARY (mink are born in May where I live)...... This video was made after only 11 days of working with this adult mink that was trapped along a canal near my friend's house!
  13. Yep, I'm quite the nutter! you are right, a baby would make a better pet, but she's quite desperate at this point, and will take what she can get. She has plenty of experience with wild animals, and I'm sure that with my help she would do just fine with a wild caught adult.
  14. No, she just want's one as a pet. She's been trying to get one for years now. She lives in Ireland, and can't seem to get any of the mink farmers to sell her one, and she's had no luck catching one ether. So since she's been at it for a couple years now without any luck, I said I'd try to find someone that would help her out. If she can't get someone close to her to catch her one, she's going to have to go all the way to France or maybe Denmark where she has connections to get a baby ranch mink.
  15. Hi all, I was hoping that someone on here can help me out. I have a friend in the UK that want's to get a mink, but hasn't had any luck catching one. Is there anyone on here who traps mink, or hunts them with dogs, who would be willing to help her out? If so, send me a private message and we'll talk further. Thanks!
  16. I recently received an exciting message from a lady who has been asking questions on training mink. She informed me that her mink just caught her first wild game! A brown rat! She has asked me to keep her identity and home country confidential as she is not allowed to have pet mink where she lives, but she gave me permission to share her photos. As far as I know this is the first time wild game has been captured by a trained mink in Europe!
  17. Here's some links to the threads I've already got on here with pics on them.... http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/303510-minkenry-hunting-stories-for-thio%E2%81%BFbasabe/ http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/299922-i-hunt-with-mink/ And here's a link to my Minkenry Facebook club. There are LOTS more pics on here.... https://www.(!64.56:886/pages/Minkenry/72678726611
  18. Ok, so it sounds like the hobs are more likely to bolt stubborn rabbits, but are also more likely to kill a rabbit. Do you guys believe the hobs are able to do these two things better than most jills purely because of their size, or does it have more to do with a males more confident attitude, and muscular build? So basically what I'm getting at is, if you were to compare a giant jill with average temperament and abilities for her size, to a tiny hob with average strength and abilities for his size (thus making the hob and jill the same size), would the hob still be able to turn the stubborn r
  19. Thioⁿbasabe' and I went to the same canal we've been searching for muskrat in this morning. I didn't plan on really hunting, as we haven't seen a single muskrat. I just wanted to scout out the canal further than I already have, and in the opposite direction. I brought a dead rat along, and was planning on finding a good spot after I was done scouting, and drag it around to lay a trail, then hide it up in one of the many abandoned muskrat dens for Thioⁿba to find and cache. As Thioⁿba and I walked along the dirt road that follows the canal, I noticed some muddy water near the entrance of a
  20. In your opinion, does the confidence of the male transfer to hunting? Like would a male be more likely to attack a proportionately larger, and more dangerous quarry than a female would?
  21. Hi all, I was just interested in hearing the different strengths, weaknesses, and comparisons between the two sexes. I haven't really had enough experience with ferrets to make a fair comparison. Here's what I've seen with mink.... Females are faster, more aggressive, more high energy, are more lightly built, and more timid. Males have more powerful bodies, especially their jaws and necks. They are also have bigger heads, thicker necks, are more laid back, and more confident. What are the differences and comparisons between the ferret sexes?
  22. Yep she does. I gave her the head, guts, and fins. The guts are her favorite
  23. Does this answer your question?
  24. Mmmm mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm what a tasty dinner my little mink provided! Those nice fat rainbow trout were DELICIOUS!
