  1. I have no idea. I have never bred mink before. It really depends on how picky I am and how hard I test them.
  2. Thanks, yeah she's a good dog, and really does a good job. I need to get some footage of her diving in on a muskrat in deeper water. This shallow water was pretty simple for her. What's really cool to watch is when the water is deep enough she has to almost submerge herself to catch the muskrat, then has to swim back with it in her mouth. THOSE are the really cool catches! I don't know how they do it, but mink are exceptionally good at getting in and killing biting prey like squirrels, muskrats, and brown rats without any noticeable injury. Sure they get hurt every now and then, but it's
  3. Yeah, because they are a wild predator, hunting with one is actually a lot like falconry, and not much like hunting with domestic animals like dogs or ferrets. Mink are surprisingly versatile, here are some videos showing the various game I have pursued with my mink......... Trout- Crayfish- Bullfrogs- Muskrats- squirrels- More traditional ratting- lamping kangaroo rats- Chipmunks-
  4. They are ridiculously complicated to train. If you have any falconry experience, they are like a super intelligent accipiter. Very high strung, very aggressive, and smart enough that they are often trying to train you. They really aren't that bad once you get the hang of working with them, but most people struggle in their initial attempt to figure them out. If you try to treat them like a ferret you are highly unlikely to have success. I haven't bred mink until now. I just barley started breeding a line of hunting mink this year, so I have a long ways to go before they are noticeably differen
  5. Yeah, I've been working with mink for 15 years now. There are very few people who do it, since they are quite the aggressive little suckers. But they are a lot of fun if you know how to handle them!
  6. I have been wanting to get some footage of my lurcher diving into the water after submerged muskrats, and this is the first footage I have gotten up to this point.

  8. I will be keeping back a few for big pest control jobs where I need a bunch of mink, and I managed to find local working homes for all but two of the rest. Those two ended up being shipped out of state to people wanting to try their hands at hunting and fishing with a mink. I did my best to find local homes so I could still use them for breeding if they turned out to be good hunters. I'm hoping to continue and improve my hunting line of mink, and the more options I have to choose from, the better results I will get.
  9. So I've started a new video series where I will show exactly how I raise and train my mink. This is the first in the series, what do you guys think?

  12. Yeah, I have heard of many instances where it has gone either way. The mink getting along with the ferrets just fine, all the way up to the mink killing ferrets. It just depends on the individual mink in question. I even know a guy who used to breed his ferret jills to his buck mink to get them out of heat. Because the mink couldn't impregnate the ferrets, it did essentially the same thing as a hob with a vasectomy. I also know of a guy over on your side of the pond who caught a baby mink that was following his mother and siblings along a stream. He took the little mink kit home and put it wit
  13. It totally depends on the animals in question. I know of several friends who have lost ferrets to mink. Some were killed in what appeared to be an accident, when the mink played too rough with their much more fragile cousin, and others it was clearly deliberate, with the mink pulling the ferret through the wire of its cage, or escaping when one of the ferrets were out and killing it outright. Just because they are raised together does not guarantee a good outcome. Remember that even between mink, killing their own siblings is not uncommon. Imagine how much more at risk ferrets are!
  14. I never have, but from what I've been told by people who have tried, there are 3 common outcomes. One is that the mink will see the ferret as prey and kill it. A second possible out come is the mink will see the ferret as a buddy, but the mink's rough play and high energy is far too much for the ferret to handle and the two must be separated for the ferret's sanity/safety. A third possible out come is things will work out just fine, and the mink and ferret get along great. My understanding is this outcome is far less prevalent than the other two. Believe it or not I have heard of
  15. The pet stores sell them for around $100-$150 as far as I can tell, but I don't buy ferrets so I don't know how much they go for with private breeders.
  16. Depends. I've seen them sell for under $100 and I've seen them sell for over $1,000.
  17. I have a bunch of people wanting to buy them. I have 3 litters totaling to 19 babies. I will keep around half a dozen.
  18. I started out by testing confidence and prey drive on the farm by dangling a muskrat skin and seeing how they reacted. If they attacked it confidently, I then tested to see how easily they released the skin if I started touching them. I only took mink who would instantly attack the skin, and hang from it while I pet them. They had to pass this test three different times, on three different nights, to make sure it wasn't just a fluke good performance. Then I took them home and did some basic training, and hunted them on muskrats and brown rats, putting them in progressively harder
  19. I always have a long line of people wanting to get into mink, usually for pets. I am VERY PICKY with who I get mink for, as the majority of people just won't put enough time into them, and will end up with a miserable little beast. But for those who prove that they are at least willing to do what they can to prepare, I get them a mink. Usually I get them one from a fur farm, but in this case I will get them some of my failed hunters, or baby mink who seem too nervous for hunting work. The ones from the start of my breeding project that I didn't take from the farm, of course stayed at the farm.
