Yeah, my wife Maggie is pregnant, so she hasn't been hunting for quite a while. She was quite excited to be able to get out and see some hunting action, even if the event was unplanned :-)

I feed the meat to my mink, and sell the pelt. Sometimes when we have extra meat, I eat a few myself. Muskrats are clean vegetarians, just like rabbits, only with dark meat similar to beef.

Of course we got rid of the rat! ;-) It took 10 maybe 15 minutes for my mink to find it hiding in the wall next to the sink, and no more rat. That was pretty much the uneventful part of the story LOL

I just thought I would share a couple stories that I thought you guys would find funny/interesting. So the first story happened yesterday when we were muskrat hunting. I was hunting along a small stream with a friend, and I asked my friend to keep an eye on my mink Rio while I walked up stream to check some other muskrat dens to see if they looked very promising. So I left him to watch the hole Rio was in, and I walked a little ways up the stream. When Rio came back out of the hole she was down, she looked around and noticed I was gone. She then promptly put her nose to the ground, and

After doing a quick little brown rat pest control job with my mink Rio, my wife Maggie and I were just going for a nice little walk in the park, when this happened..... https://youtu.be/FoExWL9KqIg

No new news unfortunately. I've just moved on with my life, as that's all I could do.

Thanks! :-)

According to all the attempts made so far, American mink cannot breed with any other member of the weasel family. Not even European mink. However, European mink can cross breed with ferrets and polecats.

If you get on YouTube and search "Joseph Carter Mink" you will find my videos. Heck, if you just search "Mink" like 75% of the videos that come up are mine.

Actually a little of both. She obviously knew I was telling her "No", but had she been headed somewhere she really wanted to go, she would have ignored me. But since she wasn't really set on the idea of crossing the road, she was willing to listen to me. They are trainable, but noting like a dog. The air was plenty cold enough that there could have been ice in the stream, but that particular stream is fed by a warm spring so the water never freezes. Don't get me wrong, the water is still dang cold (I'm guessing 3-4°C), just not cold enough to ever freeze solid. I had waders on, so I was wa

Whippet X Jagdterrier What To Expect From This Lurcher???
Minkenry replied to Minkenry's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
a border terrier cross would have the course coat and borders have the toughest hide ive ever seen on terriers probably due to there histery of otter hunting. some have skin like rhino's That's interesting, I don't know anything about border terriers, as all the terrier guys I know work patterdale, jagdterriers, or terrier/game pit bull crosses. Are border terriers made for flushing game, or for dispatching it underground like a patterdale? -
Whippet X Jagdterrier What To Expect From This Lurcher???

Yeah, I really think 1/4 jagd x 3/4 whippet or greyhound would have been a far better mix. -

Whippet X Jagdterrier What To Expect From This Lurcher???
Minkenry replied to Minkenry's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Good point! Here's the thing.... there isn't exactly a whole bunch of guys running around my country hunting with a trained mink. There really aren't that many more ferret guys here either. My style of hunting isn't common anywhere, and the closest thing to it is done by the ferreters in Europe. Hence the reason I'm seeking advice from people in Europe. -
Whippet X Jagdterrier What To Expect From This Lurcher???

I actually added a paragraph to my original post, and it answered your question -
I am considering getting a pup from a jagdterrier X whippet breeding that has recently produced a litter of pups. My understanding is that jag lurchers are relativity rare, and lurchers in general are pretty rare here in the U.S. So I'm not sure what to expect from mix like this. I have a good friend from Europe who has lots of lurcher experience that is helping me decide on what kind of dog I should get, but I thought I'd see what experiences others have had with similarly bred dogs. I would love to see any pictures or videos of any dogs that are a similar kind of cross (like a patterdale x w

Thanks Dan, I'll call you in a bit

Does anyone know how I can get in contact with dirtwinger? I know he runs lurchers on jack rabbits here in the U.S., in combination with his falcons who work the hares with his lurchers. I sent him a PM, but I don't know if he's still active on this page.... his last activity on here was clear back in May.

Thanks! I appreciate all the help I can get!

Hello every one! I'm from the U.S. and I know most everyone on here are Europeans, but I'm hoping that someone could help me connect with some U.S. guys who are breeding lurchers. I need a good all round dog that can run fast, and use it's nose. I want to hunt cottontail rabbits and jack rabbits (our local species of hare), but my main use of the dog will be to work with my hunting mink. In order to be a good mink dog, the dog needs to have a good nose for locating hiding prey like rabbits and ground squirrels out in the desert, rats along streams and ditches, and trailing the mink if I lose h

Raising Rio Part 10: Rio's First Brown Rat Hunt
Minkenry replied to Minkenry's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Yeah, I wish those locators were more useful to me. They don't help as much in minkenry, at least not the way that I like to hunt. My mink typically bring their catch back, and even when they don't I can almost always call them back either way. What would be MUCH more useful for hunting with a mink would be a device that will locate the mink if he slipped away unnoticed, and was half a mile down stream. The problem is that falconry telemetry only works when the animal is above ground, and ferret finders only work when you are standing a few feet away from the animal under ground. I really need -
