Here's a video showing the enclosure I set up for my mink Fang. I'm pretty proud of this enclosure, as I'm sure you can tell. I also show you my line I have set up for my mink to run on in my yard. https://youtu.be/wblQC_ZXtK0

My Mink And Lurcher Hunting A Muskrat Under The Ice!
Minkenry replied to Minkenry's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I don't know how it would help you with your dog, but I do have a book I wrote on training mink... https://youtu.be/b1HPDobIaPI I'd be happy to discuss what you're doing with your dog a privet message, and see if I can help. I'm far from an expert dog trainer, but I feel like I do a decent job. -
My Lurcher Catching A Muskrat Flushed By My Mink
Minkenry replied to Minkenry's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Thanks, and a Merry Christmas to you all! :-) -
Lately most of my videos have shown my mink capturing prey while my lurcher just stands by and watches. I've had several people ask why that is, so I figured I'd take this opportunity to explain why. When the mink is in a good position to capture the prey we are hunting by herself, I don't want the dog interfering. I want my dog to learn to stay out of the way when the mink has things under control. However, in circumstances when the prey is going to escape, that is when I want my lurcher to step in and capture the escaping animal. When the water is shallow enough for the mink to run in

Doe ranch mink can fit down most brown rat burrows, but the smaller wild doe mink can fit even better because wild mink are considerably smaller. Smaller sized wild buck mink can also fit down most brown rat burrows, but ranch bucks are typically FAR TOO big to fit down their holes.

Yeah, generally speaking mink do have bad tempers, and getting them angry is something you want to avoid. The smaller mink make great brown rat hunters, as they can not only enter their burrows, but unlike ferrets mink can also follow a rat up a tree, or even capture them under water.... https://youtu.be/pzdK8v-UHd4 Here's a rather crazy rat hunt we did for my birthday party a few years back (yes VERY crazy and VERY unorganized! LOL)..... https://youtu.be/90L474ao3KE And here's another hunt we did in the same in a chicken coop..... https://youtu.be/ifwnnjWWtCs

European mink actually are more like semi aquatic polecats than they are like american mink. Genetically they are quite closely related to polecats, and that's why they can breed with ferrets and polecats. They are much weaker and less aggressive than american mink, and are no where near as adaptable as the american mink. The American mink not only thrives across its native North America, it also can easily adapt to many non native countries. Thanks to fur farming it has spread across parts of South America, Europe, and Asia. On the other hand, the European mink can barely even manage to survi

I actually made a video to answer that very question, and to tell my story on how I got into mink....... https://youtu.be/1HOM24OX6Oo

I plan on it, but she is just barely 10 months old, so not fast enough to run jack rabbits yet, and not mature enough to try her on rough stuff like raccoons. I have done some cottontail rabbit hunting with her already, but I plan on holding off on hunting hare until she's more physically mature and developed. As far as toothy game, brown rats and muskrats are the only thing with teeth I've purposely let her hunt, but I do plan on hunting feral cats, foxes, and some coons. I'd also like to try her on coyotes some day down the road, with the help of experience coyote dogs of course. She does a

American mink cannot cross with ferrets, or any other Mustelid that I am aware of. Ferrets and polecats can however hybridize with the European mink, which despite the name is not very closely related to the American mink. Yes, it takes a lot of time and effort to tame and train mink. They really aren't comparable to working with domestic animals like ferrets and dogs. It's much more like working with high strung short-winged hawks (accipiters) than it is like hunting with ferrets.

My Mink And Lurcher Hunting A Muskrat Under The Ice!

As with any animal, especially wild ones, saying they do something every time is just setting you up for disappointment. I can comfortably say she comes to the whistle the vast majority of the times I call her. -
My Mink And Lurcher Hunting A Muskrat Under The Ice!
Minkenry replied to Minkenry's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I've trained mink from all sorts of backgrounds, and various different ages. This particular mink was born on a fur farm, and I purchased her as a little 5 week old kit and bottle raised her. Here's a video from when she was younger... https://youtu.be/k4Yn1u3CigU -
I've got a fun hunting story to share with everyone from this morning. Since I didn't capture any of it on film, I thought I would share it in story form..... I took my pointer lurcher Onsa and mink Fang out early this morning before light for a little muskrat hunt before work. I released the lurcher and told her to go find a muskrat, and we started walking around the lake. After walking for a little ways, Onsa stopped and started sniffing and scratching at the frozen ground near the lake shore. I walked over with Fang and took her off the leash so she could look for the Muskrat hole. There wa

New Video Of Mink And Lurcher Getting A Muskrat
Minkenry replied to Minkenry's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I've been taking this mink on walks since it was so young that she followed me like I was her mother, so it's pretty much all she knows at this point. When training adult mink it can be a bit of a process at first, as they panic when the feel the tension of the harness. They also typically panic because you are walking closely behind them. So yes, it does take some getting used to when you are taming an adult mink. -

Here's a video I filmed yesterday morning. The mink took this one down, but one of these days I'll get some footage of the lurcher catching stuff too. I just haven't gotten it on film yet. -
