so they say it is over worked brass then, seems reasonable to me. -
Anyone have any ideas on why the .17HMR has case issues and what is causing the blockage issues some lads are having.

Just giving my take on the subject, i am in the same place as you regards HMR i have very little interest and not enough to have read all the posts on SD, but i do find it interesting, didnt mean to imply anything. -

neck splitting is normally caused by over worked brass becoming brittle, the pic that deker put on shows splitting that looks to eminate from the shoulder, it is doubtful that an over sized chamber would do this without the user noticing the other effects of an oversized chamber, even then i am not sure an over sized chzmber would cause splitting like that. the most likely explaination would be the content of the brass or a process error while stamping the plug. -

The HMR has issues and I don't see anyone arguing about that, but you are generalising and mixing up issues. If a cartridge has enough energy to split a case it will have enough energy to get the bullet out of the barrel. That is a squib load not a split case, commonly attributed to no propellant in the case?. As regards "Blowing his rifle up", what does that mean and where is the picture? I have to agree with this, duff ammo will be to blame. and i agree that it is unlikely, not impossable but unlikely that a barrel will be breached. -
I have no idea of any .22lr, HMR or WMR figures over 200 yards and as you say they should be of no practical use to anyone, but out of interest what is your source of this information? I have used two sources the first is the ammo manufacturers stats, aware that these can sometimes be inflated i tend to take an avarage of 3 or 4 which i then normally put in to my own ballistic programme, or i will use info that i have gathered on my own ammo through the chrony. But this was mainly taken from the federal catalog, it is good for comparison, even if they do inflate things a little it all works

that was fairly rude !!!!!

They have a place, as does the HMR etc etc...... I like mine, and as I always say, "it gives me a feeling of confidence", and the 30g V-Mag is excellent for my requirements! ...and some people are getting their wires crossed, the HMR is less effected in the wind than the WMR, and retains its energy better at looooonger range, look it up yourself! Deker your right all bar the energy bit. From Hornady Website, like I said, look it up yourselves! HMR17g V-Max Muzzle 245ft lb, 100 yards 136ft lb, 200yards 72ft lb Energy loss in 200 yards 173ft lb WMR30g V-Max, Muzzle 322ft

Cheers for that. was an interesting read, its a good reason to leave them alone for a few more years, these problems always get sorted out in the end so in the mean time HMR owners beware !!

Whats the SD i would like to have a look at that

I think you might find that the 22wmr has more energy full stop. At around 150yrds the two bullets come close with under 11ftlb between them but after that the 17hmr falls off quicker than the 22wmr, which is only to be expected with the weight diff between the two bullets, but if you consider the diff the .17hmr proforms very well indeed. That was based on the 40g bullet. how ever i have just looked up the 30g which is very diff, the the 30g has less energy at 100yrds but more after about 200yrds puts the two bullets very close after about 90 yrds. so there is not a lot to choose between the

.17Hmr Supervisory Condition
rimmer replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I think your condition will have been put on because you prob didnt have a shotgun cert before hand, which always helps as it shows a progression in experiance, and if you think about it, its only sensible that you be supervised if you can show no previous experiance of firearms. I had the same condition years ago on a center fire and my supervisor wrote to them after 6 months and the condition was removed. -
very interesting but i use the torch as mentioned be for it`s cheap and easy.

First Of Second Focal Plane - Which Is Best
rimmer replied to aics308's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I see what your saying, but from a ranging point of view i would have thought that the FFP, was far better, but as you say i suppose its personal choice. your mate needs to get a scope with a finer ret or the post and rail ret. -
Hi all I am new to this site but not new to shooting, I have been doing it since I was about 10 and I am 46 now. I normally shoot, fox, rabbit and birds, but fox is my main quarry and has been for 20 years. I reload my own ammo and although I like to think I know it all, I ferquently prove to myself I dont! I lookforward to getting to know some of you.

If You Could Only Have 1 Gun, What Would It Be?
rimmer replied to MrDjk's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
12 bore for me -
I think these syndicates could be a good thing in some areas and a pain in others, I used to get a free membership to one in the south east, the farmer had 17 farms and he would tell you what he was doing and where. I never bumped into another member in the 5 years I was a member.

First is by far better if you are shooting any distance
