  1. Thats brilliant . One that got me lately is that Bull that got a reprieve from slaughter (failed TB test) cos its a Hindu sacred animal. Our farmers lose their livlihoods over foot & mouth etc etc and they get to keep an animal that has the potential to spread disease. I normally have the attitude live and let live but not anymore. Pig sick of it.
  2. Hi Millet, i haved just googled hoverfly and apparently there are 250 species of British hoverfly! My books only give at the most 15 species so guess alot more 'googling' required! Insect world fascinates me!
  3. About a bloke who decides to give up office work and live in the Alaskan Interior for a year alone. Accounts of log cabin building, hunting for food and wildlife encouters. Alaska being my dream destination this book really got the daydreamer in me going. According to the auther there is a book of the same title that precedes this one by Jack London, would like to know if anyone has read this and from where it can be bought as i have looked for it but cant find it.
  4. Will do. Its a dull morning here today and they werent out. Went out with Jam jar and everything to try and catch one. Dont know if this narrows down ID but the buddelia is next to the box hedge from where they seem to emerge from but cant see a nest/bike. Live in North East scotland in hills (mainly heather, bracken etc surrounding us) They are very fast flying and acrobatic, smaller than stable type fly but certainly 'see them off'. Never there when i get home from work in afternoon just there in the early morning sun. Thanks for the help everyone in ID'ing these wont settle till i know what
  5. Although i dont have kids i see a fair few scraps at the bar where i work and quite often if a lad has got a pasting he will push his girlfriend away if she trys to help/comfort him. Presume it has something to do like Simoman says being embaressed at losing a scrap. (still living in an age where men are supposed to be tough?) What pr*cks those older lads are. Hope your lad is OK.
  6. Were at it again this morning.(wondering now if they are competing for the sun spots as thats where the sun hits of a morning) Dont look like the pics youve got there so now i am really intrigued. Think i may have to catch one in a jar for closer examination. Seem to be very aggresive. Thanks for the replies.
  7. Beautiful animals. Love the rut as we get them in the feild behind house. Something magical about it.
  8. About 6am Sunday morning i was watching a right ruccas on the Buddelia. There were heaps of stable type flies being mobbed by what looked liked juvenile wasps (common). Looked in all the ID insect books i have and there is no info or anything else i could match them to. Can someone enlighten me - do common wasps hatch as full size adults or do they grow? I presumed because they have an exoskeleton they dont and that it must be a different species of flying insect ie hoverfly but they looked too small even for them.
  9. had the heating on last night for an hour as it was chilly. Up here its been either damp and cold or humid midges are rife!!
  10. cos i think our Patterdalexlakeland reminds me of Grover and hes my favourite muppet!
  11. Oh my god thats awful really sorry to hear that. I did a Microchipping course couple years and have got all the equipment but have only done a few dogs as i realised soon after then it seemed a bit pointless and like you say what happens to these poor dogs when theives realise. I now would prefer to tattoo as i would like to think it would make the ba*tards realise before they actually took the dog. Also in our spaniel his chipped moved (not chipped by me!) and had migrated to his shoulder which although vet says nothing to worry about i wouldnt want something floating about in me! What happen
  12. In the same vein as the post about music while surfing. I have opened the window and can hear - oystercatchers, cows a mooing and the damn cockeral crowing is head off .Least the dogs are quiet for once What about everyone else?
  13. Wow thanks guys for the fast replies!! Have checked the horse vet kit and have epsom salts - normally with the horse i put a tablespoon over feed but guess thats not right for a small dog. Any ideas what doseage and how to administer ie over food/in water? I will leave her alone for a couple more days and if still full of milk after that i will give it a go. Shes had Galastop a couple times for false pregnanices in the past so will use that if all else fails. Ive also reduced her food ration slightly is that the right thing to do?
  14. Hi Our JRT has been away from her pups for 3 days (this is hers and ours first litter) Can anyone advise when her milk should be dried up. Her teats are still swollen with milk and i am a little worried she will get mastitus. Am i right that with mastitus her teats would be hard/hot and inflammed? Cheers
  15. Hi We had a GSD diagnosed with this at 3 yo (plus bad hips) old boy lived very well till 10 and a half! Not sure how the legislation is in England re animal by products as we had to get a license but we got raw tripe from slaughterhouse and fed him that along with a very high protein pup meal. Never was the fattest dog but kept the runs away. Couldnt feed him the tiniest bit of fat or carbohydrates or he would have the runs for days. He did get into to habit of raiding bins tho (guess it was cos he was always hungry) so fed him 2/3 times aday smaller meals. Tripe is not the nicest thing t

  19. Hi Ferret15 could you post the full address/directions for sending a parcel out as i am a bit confuesed as to how to send it. And suggest anything else that could go in it. Noted Coffee/pot noodle/wet wipes etc anything else? Really good idea and glad it would make them realise we DO support our troops whereever they are and whatever they are doing even if we dont agree with our Goverments reasons for sending them.
