brilliant blaise, good to see breeds that's been ruined and on the dole here in the uk doing a bit abroad. It would be a good place to get the start of working lines to put back into uk stock. I also applaud the men in France working their Fox Terriers but would add that dogs of that physical type were never worked in the UK or Ireland. Of course dogs called Fox Terriers were worked at one time but they were not of the type seen in the photographs on this thread. This type is a product of the show ring and was developed by KC breeders long after dogs being called Fox Terriers were to be fou

A day out with some friends who are hunting the traditionnal way with wire fox terrier.

Before the middle of 80's, foxes and badgers was destroyed in order to stop rabies. A huge eradication with chemical means. Since 1986, foxes have been vaccinated with baits dispatched by helicopter. This has been a great success. We have no more rabies in France. In fact, the last european rabies wasn't dangerous for human. Some older type of rabies was lethal. The late case of death by rage in france (continental) was in 1924.

We dispatch most of the badgers because they aren't hunted sufficiently in my area. Sometimes we release when we're in the forest. Nobody is allowed to relocate a wild animal in France (nevertheless may be some lads have done...).

Yes she tries to locate and estimate the deep.

These pupils are learning breeding (dogs ans cats), kennel management and dog training with belgian shepherd. Each of them have a belgian sheperd puppy at the beginning and they keep their dog during 2 years. Later these dogs are sold to police, army or private security. For few days they are learning hunting hounds and terriers. It isn't their main class. They'll have a little test. None of them is hunter and some of them are against hunting. But they respect what we do, professors are straight whit this principle.

We know all the badger places around the kennel, no problem to control them. In fact, I fear for the future, Nowadays Diesel know where is a good place. I can't let him free in the garden.

Change your plans ! Sunday, my two sons and few friends went to hunt badgers. They had choose a place in the village of Blaise (5 km from the kennel). At 8h, my son Fernand was preparing the tools, near the kennel with one of our patterdale, Diesel. Diesel has escaped, He ran across the meadow of the horses, he crossed the field under the road, heading for the forest. The dog's found a badger place by himself. They had to change the plans. 10 hours later, two badgers have been catch front to Diesel.

What are the big dogs stood in the background mate This is a griffon nivernais, a very famous dog for boar. One of my favorite. But this one is hunting fox (he's still able to run after a boar for a long time).

I'm a teacher for a day. I'm teaching terrier work and badger hunt. My students are learning canine activities in a high school. They aren't hunters, most of them are young girls, I feel them a bit scared but they are listenning seriously. Another day, we'll meet together with the dogs for a hunt. Very interesting. Digging class - Theoretical part

I met a Master who was using some barker jack russell terriers in a stone place the Friday in order to prepare saturday hunt. Dog was barking few hours. Man was waiting in silence. The saturday, he hunted another place easy to dig 200 meters away. According to this man, badgers had migrated during the night. No proved, just heard about.

When I hunt a place that could be dangerous (deep, stone...), I prefer to use a dog who come back. According to me, it's useful to have few dog like this in your kennel. When It's evening and you are tired, you can put a dog able to hunt two hours. But if the dogs in the car are all long-term hunters, you have to renounce.

I don't think so because our failures are mostly explained by the lack of stop-end on large places, the hunt is moving side to side until the dog withdraws or the badger escapes. As the badger moves, no need to locate precisely. When I fail, I try with another dog. And I come back another day until the luck arises. During the whole season, the failure due to my inability to locate my dog is just 2 or 3 times. Thus we are clearly powerless. I'll never change my way of hunt to boost my catchs from 69 to 72... Our great pleasure is searching.

I was just thinking the same things... I have seen blaise post on here were 1 hunt and they have had 2-3 in a stop! so have yous been out searching 102 times and that has produced 69 digs? or 69 badgers? 102 hunts of the dogs (dog is barking in earth = one hunt, whatever the following) I you want more concerning my statitics 2015 : 38 days 102 hunts (average 2,7 dogs are working each day out) 108 meters digged (average 2,9 meters per day) dog's work 145 hours (average 3,8 hours each day)

Concerning foxes, I can find them in badger's set in december or january. Usually dogs dispatch them.
-
Fail ! The way I hunt here, I can fail. If a Dog hunts one or two hours without a stop-end, I retrieve the dog. 1 hunt 0 badger. On a large place, If I uses 3 dogs one after one during the day, I count 3 hunts. Each work of a dog is a hunt. More than 50% of hunts are failed. Those who succeed give one or few badgers together.

A third of very experienced, you have to be cautious because they are older. A third of middle-aged, they can do the great part of the job but don't forget the future. A third of young, they are the future. Last season, the most digs we had was over Comète. A Jack Russell bitch, 14 digs and 18 badgers. Unfortunately, this bitch is dead before the end of the season (killed by car). Most of our job is done with patterdales. According to me, a hunt is the work of one dog. 69 badgers for 102 hunts. We never hunt fox.

what an interesting question ! I'll try an answer but for the time, this morning, I'm going to hunt. Last season, we used 11 different dogs in 38 days and 102 different hunts. So average was 9.3 hunts per dog per badger season.
