Transmission of RHD occurs by direct contact with an infected animal and fomites. Rabbits acquire RHD through oral, nasal or conjunctival pathways. Urine, faeces and respiratory secretions may also shed the virus. The virus may also be carried by the wind. Carriers of the virus may remain infectious for up to a month depending on climate conditions; however, the virus has been known to persist for as little as 2 days and as long as 215 days. An infected carcass or hairs from an infected animal may also transmit RHD. Fomites such as clothing, contaminated food, cages, bedding, feeders and water

Darren around Gwent there has never been real big numbers .Last year the mixi hit hard in November if i rember right .This year i have seen very little mixi apart from out Ragland way .There is plenty of trade on the farms where i control the foxes so hopefully providing the mixi or the RHD dont hit before next autumn then we should start seeing half tidy numbers about .

So if it can be carried by yourself ,ferrets ,dogs not to mention wild predators then i suppose we will see the end of the rabbit in the uk in no time .

Is there anything else going in the field apart from rabbits ?

I have a farm in Monmouth which had a lot of rabbits on it but now i am seeing dead ones all over the place .shame as this place has not had anyone on there doing the rabbits for 10 years or more and to find a farm with such numbers down this way is something special .But im sure they will recover come the spring /summer .

I like the way he has bent the tealer lol I got one where i had a squirrel on a peg snare i will get it put up ,
-
Thanks Mr Teapot

A nail or a wire staple knocked in to pole and tie snare to it .... the stiffness of the brass will allow snare to sit above the pole Mr Tea pot what i found with the brass and stainless snares for squirrels is to support them both with a small twig with a slot cut in top .drive two staples in next to each other one for the snare to attach to and one to put the twig in ,Works a treat lol. Also a nice touch is the wire bird feeder filled with maize ,

Very good Mr Tea .Nice to see a few rabbits lol

One other thing .I leared the hard way !! if the fence has barbed wire running along the bottom of the fence cut the barbs off or the snare will foul on the barbs .Like i said i learned the hard way
-
Are you setting them on the fence or on a tealer .If on the fence make sure the loop is off the ground .If not you may find the fox will slip through the snare .It needs to get its paws under the snare and head in the snare .If using tealers then the fox maybe jumping through the snare but this is not that common and i cannot see them all jumping through . try setting the snare at 12 inchs from the ground on flat ground and alter the height if snaring on banks to the bottom loop this works fine for me .The most important thing is make sure the snare is loaded or the fox will back out of the

Snaring fence lines /Hedges is always a tricky business the risk of entanglement increases greatly .That being said there are a few way to try to prevent this occurring.I tend to keep the snare short on such situations so the fox cannot not jump upwards .Glenn put a good idea on here i think its in the pinned posts where there snare is attached to another wire that goes back into the field so when the fox hits the snare hang on i better change the word ! when the fox hits the restraint the fox goes out into the field away from the fence /hedge and is away from the entanglement situation .

Its always a worry that someone from the general public might see a fox in the wire be it set correctly or not they wont know the difference .I try to keep well away from the roads .The fox wonders around for miles in a night so you can snare them well away from the roads .Anyhow i think you did the right thing by sorting it out .
-
Well done on catching two straight off .I wounder if a buck had been trying to mate with it while it was in the snare .
-
Like i said it depends on the thickness of the branch .Glenn who wrote that explained to me over the phone how to snare them .He knows his stuff fair play to him . Tell you what thoe it becomes addictive snaring squirrels lol .Have fun !!

There is a good article in the pinned posts about snaring squirrel. I have snared quite a few useing 4 strand brass wire and stainless wire .Pike fishing trace wire is also good . As for the height you set them that depends on the thickness of the branch/pole the thinner the pole the lower the squirrel will run .Bait i use a mesh bird feeder filled with whole maize .This works very well due to it being yellow .The squirrels see it from a long way off and the little birds such as blue tits cannot peck it from the feeder

7x7 2mm you can get it from lots of places the last i bought i got from Handy straps and befor that fox snaring uk
-
In the past i have used fish trimmings from the chippy .Did not make it into a concentrated lure just used it as it was .Make sure its coverd up or the birds will take it all .Good stuff as it is frozen when i got it and the chippy was glad to give it to me as they just throw it away .Only problem it draws other things in also .
-
I stand corrected then
-
No need for stink pits ,lure etc find the runs they are using and set the snares on the runs . They are running the runs anyway so no need to bait up .and when caught keep setting either side of the catch circle there will be more than enough lure there left from the fox that has been snared previously .

Wise words there Mr tea pot

Put into google trapworks rabbit snare the link will work then .
