  1. after the moult hawks need to be retrained as its been 6 months since the last time they flew to the fist. it only takes me around 3 weeks including manning to have the bird free flying again. its more refreshing their memory so to speak than retraining them
  2. sorry mate already got a telemetry setup. just enquiring as a back just incase and for short range work where getting the reciever out might be a ballache
  3. he finishes the moult early september takes me around 3 weeks to retrain him and have him of the creance. but at that time of year the cover is still thick so i basically focus on recalls and bringing his fitness up and maybe blag the odd kill, then when the cover dies its all about hunting with the ferrets, hawks hunted 7 days a week then feed him up 1 day and then bring him back down the day after, this happens every other week or when the hawk has had a really good day with multiple kills or a really long testing flight.
  4. can u use any radio scanner to pick up the 173mhz frequency from transmitters as long as it is rated for that frequency. found this specific 173mhz antenna that can replace the standard antenna so it will only pick up the one frequency good for short distance work and bush work when bird takes game in heavy cover. only as a back up system. saves falling on your back and breaking your reciever. also its more portable. antenna link: http://www.nhbs.com/rubber_duckie_omnidirectional_antenna_173_mhz_tefno_187436.html i know of some that rate the scanners but use the yaesu vr-500 as it support
  5. depends how the hawk is with ferrets mate. usually when im out with my mates younger hawks we will only use light coloured ferrets as this is my hawks 5th season he has worked with ferrets his entire hunting life so is fine with even the darkest ferrets
  6. some good pics there mate. sounds like you had a good time. this weekends gonna be my last ferreting trip of the season. roll on next season
  7. im well up for a field meet next season with the hunting life lads. get some ferreters involved could be a great day. have to keep an eye out for some pottential land where the farmer wont mind numbers of people at one time. ive got some good lamping land aswell charlie caller, and since your in the same boat as me with work and that we will have to have a night out sometime. hopefully the bird will take to the lamp like a duck to water
  8. more than welcome to come out with me mate but most birds will be moulting at the minute as its the end of the season for most . so save me as a friend and come end of october time when the hawk has been retrained and his fitness is slightly higher you are more then welcome to tag along. as long as your not one of these di*ks that ask all the questions then i never hear from you again. im pontefract area by the way. also moulting is when a bird of prey is left alone to replace their damaged feathers from the previous season and give your quarry breeding time, generally they are put down en
  9. if your quarry is mainly rabbits then i dont think a male harris can be beaten. as long as the hawk is from a good renowned breeder and not just a diy clutch produced from idiots who are only in it for the money. but if youve got a mentor you could really fly any hawk they are willing to teach you with. however if there is other quarry to be taken then perhaps consider a redtail or female harris as they have the minerals to take on hares. try and get yourself a mentor but if there is no access to a mentor dont be detered but maybe consider a falconry course or certainly take longer in your res
  10. thanks for the advice lads will keep a very close eye on there progress and even more on the female. thanks
  11. hoping to fly a cast of harris`s next season as two of my mates have bought a male and a female harris so hopefully they both get along with my 4 year old male. they have already been on walks with me whilst i have been flying and hunting my harris. but there could be a problem, the female isnt bothered by him flying around at all but just sits there and watches wheras the smaller male cheeps and makes noise when my bird flys. is this a problem or is he just nervous with my bird flying. there ok when perched near each other just when my bird is flying he does it
  12. ye gonna try and get someone else to show me but if all else fails I now have had advice from the iff lads on how to do it. like i said iv filed the beak a few times before but the beak doesnt need doing yet it was just for future refrence. thanks for the help lads i now feel pretty confident on what to do should i not find anyone else
  13. while im here can i ask a question about beak coping.by i know how to do them the harris has only ever needed his mandible filing down. just for future reference should i need it, do i cut the beaks point with the clippers from the front or the sides. also with the talons do i cut them of straight? and by reshape them do i round them off with the file
  14. can anyone describe to me how to cope a harris hawks talons. got all the necessary equipment but the person who used to do it for me has been put in prison so will have to do it myself .Do i cut them flat or at an angle. they only need a couple of mm of each. ive been told to take a little of at a time until i reach the required length. i know how to do the beak as ive done it before but never done the talons as im scared i could split them. is the cutting movement a sharp one? how do they regrow back do they just reshape themself or grow back at a point?
  15. honest mate it was huge seen one before for sale at pets at home and thought that was big but it was only 1/2 the size of the one i saw today. would make a right stew that would lol
  16. bet it would! is the goldie yours? male or female? think there the best of the best in the world of birds. love to see them being flown even if they are only on youtube, read all the article on the eagle website with the man who trained that male goldie ivan. couldnt pull myself away from the stories until i read every one
  17. went to the pet shop today when purchasing some rats for the harris and saw a giant continental rabbit. couldnt believe the size of it. knew they were big but not that big, you could have put a sadle on it. if any ever escaped and bred we would all need to fly goldies lol. heres what one looks like
  18. ye 2 vets told me this wheras another that didnt have the jabs themselves explained that alot of excess "jab" is thrown away and people will only get them cheap if they have alot of jills in season at one time eg ferret rescues
  19. its also just that it will be £40 per ferret so £ for the both for one jab each, then if they come into season twice like many jills do pottentially it could cost me £160 per year. so am going to try the capsules on one of the jills and hob then try to utilise a vasectomised hob servise for the other
  20. my ferrets love hard boiled eggs so was going to put what would be a fraction of the capsule inside it. also i wasnt going to give it as flea control only looking for the fertility effect. also i can afford the ferrets it just annoys me other can get the jab for as little as£7 but i have to pay £40 +
  21. not a problem with the jills mate just taking them out of season. by never having a problem with your jills do you mean not having to take them out of season of health wise?
  22. i shopped around today in search of vets and the only vets that offers a vasectomy is the one asking the ridiculous price. vet told me the same regarding jabs as the jabs come in 100ml injections and jills only use a fraction of that. youd think the company that produces the jab would offer a smaller quantity of the jab so the price will fall for the customers.
  23. also in these studies on humans the neem was taken all the time. remember women can get pregnant every month wheras ferrets are only once or twice a year, so ive nothing to lose as it has been proven safe for mammals and i cant see how something herbal will cause damage when taken in appropriate doses for only 3 weeks max. and if it doesnt work i have a plan b now ferretfatcamp has offered me his service
