  1. sorry Sue but why? Unless they are really emaciated then it's not worth feeding them but if not I always feed them to the ferrets, myxy poses no danger to ferrets at all.
  2. I certainly agree with that.
  3. LOL ...Ive changed it........Nostradamus well thats a subject
  4. I'm really not dismissing Mendels theory indeed as you know it's the corner stone of modern genetics, I guess all that I'm saying is that it's far more comlicated than that I bet he could never had predicted this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/4365002.stm notice here that colouring seems also to be linked with aggression
  5. True again albinism is a pretty simple mutation but that surely proves my point, at one time all ferrets were pure polecat Mendles theory would never had predicted albinism. His theory would predict pure polecat all the time it does not take into account mutation etc.
  6. Thats because what you get depends on chance, which is why I got told off for hypothesising from a single example. Over many examples Mendelian ratios will hold true, if colour in ferrets is based on a single gene. true - do we know however that colour is based on a single gene though?
  7. -The trouble with this topic is that their are only a very few 'cast iron' rules concerning this type of genetics. I agree Albino X albino = all albino. or pure polecat to pure polecat = all polecat. As I've said before Crow the genetics you are using are simple Mendelian genetics http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/instruct/mcclean...del/mendel1.htm These relate to simple plants, in his case pea plants. Ferrets are obviously far more complicated and although it's fun tryimg to predict colour type it's not really possible, it also does not explain, sandy, silvers, blacks or black eyed whi
  8. if you have a cash problem you shouldnt have pets .they cost money lol you should always take this into account when getting any animal and be prepared . Well said. And I have just noticed you first posted this on May 19th - 5 days to get treatment. Also you are the one who criticised me for culling ferrets -but to go and cull an animal which there is nothing wrongfor whatever reason if it breeding lines or whatever is wrong.. Well I can tell you this for nothing I wouldn't let any animal suffer that long without treatment. Perhaps I cull to stop idiots like you from h
  9. LOL I don't feel like a baby after a hard shift laying slabs
  10. I spent ten minutes writing this then you locked the post. So I'll post this and you can delete it. I'm 44 now and had my first ferret at 14. Like Meerihunter It's only in the last couple of years thaat I have started to cull them. Why ? - when I first started ferreting people kept ferrets for work pure and simple, those that were good workers survived those that didn't were culled. ' True things in some way have changed for the better eg my grandads ferrets were fed bread and milk and he used to pull the canine teeth out so they would not kill I used to have no problem w
  11. ....very true I cull within a day of being born.
  12. Depends on the litter size. If more than 6 then yes I cull.
  13. Look forward to the pics. Are you from Alva? If so I'm only a couple of miles from you.
  14. 6months is to young to start working her anyway but get her out with other dogs if it isnt in her its hard to put in if u no what i mean? I agree that at that age she is still too young for 'proper' work, but for a daily mooch with my spaniel and whippet I see nothing wrong with taking them out at that age. She's been doing this since she had her jags, been ferreting numerous times (as an observer) and generally out when the other dogs are out. I've always bought my pups up this way and in that 30 plus years it's never done them any harm, they gain nothing from being kept in a ken
  15. LOL......Im sure they will settle down eventuallly
  16. ....collie lurcher to collie lurcher, line bred.
  17. Just thought I'd put up a few pics of the pup I got off Brigg. Now 6 months old (almost 24 inches tts) shes caught 3 young rabbits and a crow so far! A very strange pup, very headstrong, she also rarely runs! which is a bit strange for a lurcher, the rabbits shes caught shes scented and either pounced or just done a quick rush...very strange. She'll also watch rabbits that are yards in front of her and not bother, something I've only seen in much older dogs. I can't yet quite make my mind up shes either going to be something special or a monkey Anyway here's the pics. ps as you

  19. Is she touching your hand Kay? i guess it's your greyhound Kay Try covering the treat with the whole of your hand and let him sniff it, gently opening it , if he tries to snatch reprimand him, if he gently sniffs etc open your hand more carrying on until the whole of the treat is revealed. Remember he's probably not used to treats and if he is like any greyhound I've had he'll want to bolt any food down as quickly as possible. whole litters of greyhounds are often reared together for a long time so they have to eat their food quickly.
  20. Nice....350 or so years old as well! Nothings new ....bought this off ebay a pencil drawing from 1907. I suppose lurchers have always been around
  21. .......just re read my post and I thought I must clarify a couple of things. I'm not advocating taking a 5 month pup lamping or hunting on it's own or expecting it to catch. IMHO if you take a pup out from day one (12 weeks plus) and it first sees a rabbit it 'knows' it's never going to catch it, mine just watch them hopping away and carried on being a pup, she's only now starting to take an interest and will have a quick grab if one gets put out by my spaniel and she'll put in a half hearted run. If however you take a pup the same age that has never seen a rabbit, indeed kept away f
  22.  Spot on. My pup has been coming out with me and my other two dogs since she was fully jagged (about 12 weeks of age). She's been ferreting, watched the other dogs catch, mark etc. Now I know she is not going to catch anything yet (shes only 5 months) but everyday she learns something new. I've used this method for 30+ years and it hasn't gone wrong yet. can i ask you how often do your dogs get injured Rarely. edited to add I think I know where you are coming from.
