  1. Here's a little history on our National Anthem and of Great Britain's attempt to reclaim her lost colonies. It's a long read, but informative. Cleese is no better than any other talking head that will say anything to get air time on TV or space in the tabloids. We had friends in from Alberta Canada last summer. They take offense at Americans stupidity in making fun of the Queen and the Royal family. National_Anthem.pdf
  2. I don't often look at the youtube stuff that's posted here. I did look at this one and was struck by how much of a dork this lad is and what a great job the orthodontist did in putting his choppers right. Parents must have spent $5000 or more on that work. Every time he sticks his great big yap in front of the camera is advertising for one great piece of work. Mom and Dad must be really proud of Junior.
  3. Hey Trapper, I'll assume you just really want to try steel shot but before you spend any money, compare the prices of steel vs. bismuth/tungsten. If they're similar, I'd recommend you buy the alternative non-tox cartridges. We jump shot the backwaters of a good size lake years ago - Canada geese took flight and we hit one on the rise with #2 steel shot from a 3" cartridge at 20-25 yards. It crumpled and hit the water, out of sight. We spent 15-20 minutes searching for the bird (we had 2 experienced springers with us). No success. We got in the boat kept looking. No success. As we were load
  4. We were forced by political forces to use steel shot here in the US for a number of years. My results with it were horrific; especially on geese. Steel shot wounded and crippled enough waterfowl (not recovered) that I finally gave up until a better alternative became available. I've used and reloaded bismuth shot for the last two years and am reasonably satisfied with it. I can't speak to how well tungsten shot may or may not perform. I still not comfortable using bismuth cartridges at longer distances over bigger water but they perform well when jump shooting or decoying inland waters. My
  5. The only thing I would add is that Halal has been discussed, studied, quantified, justified, condemned, etc. for a long, long time. You're not the first and frankly won't be the last to talk about it. I would recommend Dr. Temple Grandin's website, www.grandin.com, for a long hard look at the practice - click the "Ritual Slaughter" link. Here in the States, we have to take an animal to a USDA approved facility for slaughtering for anything other than home use. I'd rather a Jewish rabbi with a sharp knife than a government bureaucrat with all his paperwork. Food use animals should be raised, p
  6. Just got back from the Westfield Shoot in Massachusetts. Thought I'd post the link to the site as a reminder that, in spite of what our elected officials believe, gun owners are not a threat to society, they are! www.copfirearms.com In spite of all the bilge that goes around on this site, its users are well informed and concerned countrymen (women) and should be listened to - we're all on the same side. There's damn few left who believe in themselves and their principles. We've learned over here that when the "s--t hits the fan" (Katrina, 9/11) there will be NO government official with any
  7. Based on the recommendations from this site, I picked up a copy of the book from Amazon.com. The front cover shows a painting of Larry Banville, circa 1843, holding what has to be the ugliest fowler ever built. The cover also shows what appears to be the actual fowler laid across some mementos of his life. This fowler may be the inspiration for building our next muzzleloader. It is unique! Can anyone point us to where this fowler may be and how we could contact the owners for information on the piece? We're looking for all the standard stuff needed to build as well as any clear photos showin
  8. Saw Fairport Convention here in the States last month; tune up for their Cropredy Festival. Simon Nichol looks as bad as I do after all these years. I made it a point to mention that to him. Good thing he'd been drinking martini's for the prior three hours. I didn't offend him one bit. They were and are one great f----ng band!
  9. Veterinary science has named the condition of dogs eating feces; it's called coprophogy. Talking with a fellow just the other day about his great big dog having "a taste for the turd". I suspect it has a lot to do with the dog being bored, not sufficiently exercised or just plain nasty but I really don't have an answer/cure. Internet should provide some pleasant insight into the condition, etc.
  10. 1. Hard Hunting by Swingle and Shaughnessy 2. Reminiscenses of Woodland Stalking by Ritchie 3. The Amateur Poacher 4. The Book of the Rifle by Carmichael 5. New England Grouse Hunting by Foster Good to see Leo Ritchie's book listed on a prior post. Great memoir of times gone by.
  11. Ken Roebuck's book, "Training Spaniels", is invaluable. Jim Spencer's book"Training Spaniels the American Way" is good too if you buy into using some non-slip retriever training methods with spaniels. He's been successful and presents some good alternate thinking. Use both, but Roebuck is still tops. I'd also recommend Joan Bailey's book on training. It presents a different slant and makes you realize that no matter how good the training, there is a team aspect to effective gunning and we're part of the team.

    DAVE HANCOCK

I'll admit I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer and further admit I know nothing about coursing other than what I've learned from this site. I'd be quickly thrown in jail if I were to turn a sighthound loose here in this part of the States except on a lure coursing field (and a crossbred lurcher would never be allowed on the course in the first place). I read Mr. Shitter's informative post and looked at the Hancock website. It appears his dogs are not worked or evaluated in the field and are bred to some standard he and his daughter have determined. My question is this; how should a prop
  13. Try the link to Cabela's on this site. Search under chronographs. They'll be $-$90 US. On-line ordering, shipping is reasonable and they stand behind their products.
  14. Try www.jghv.de. Look under "Verein" for Kleiner Munsterlander to contact the breed clubs direct. If you're looking for a breeder referal, look under "Kontakt". Scroll down to Wolf Schmidt-Korby's e-mail address and send him a message describing what you're looking for. He's an English speaker and should be able to point you in the right direction.
  15. VDD-GNA breeders are not bound by any prohibition as to where and who they can sell to. They agree to abide by the rules of the parent club in Germany which, to my knowledge, does not prohibit sales to specific individuals or countries. Years ago, there was no JGHV testing in North America, still DD's were imported. Far sighted individuals worked long and hard to bring a breed club (with all the parent club standards) here. Similarly, wachtelhunds are being imported from Germany, Poland and elsewhere. There's no current testing organization (JGV_USA may provide a test venue in the future) but
