got to agree with gem, its highly unlikely that a horse would abort due to the sound of an air rifle or caller, personally i think the owner of the horse was defo feeling sad and wanted some reason her mare aborting and unlucky for you she chose to blame you. i have horses and my husband and friend shoot shot guns regularly very close to the paddock, granted mine have got used to the noise so they are fine with it but im sure that that mare has heard other noises before, so would not spook enough to cause that much stress, i would put my money on it that its not your 'fault', and i would tell

ha ha mine did same, she went through the fence first, so we repaired it, then i watched n she stepped over it so we electric fenced it all up, goes up next day and shes stood out again, so i thought ok, back ont tether, goes back few hours later she's off the tether! so extended field, raised fencing, electric fenced again all over and bugger me she just pops 5ft gate like it was nowt!!! so what do ya do , ha ha cant get mad though because she doesnt go far!
