  1. Just wondering if a traditional irish style spade would do as well as the bulldog types?
  2. Cheers for the tips hadnt thought of sharing a bowl. ONly other thing then that has me with any concerns is when the pup is going to be able to hold her own as right now any of the ferrets can easily injure her, but at the same time I don't want to leave it too long so as the tables get reversed and I end up with dead ferrets. The pup is a little over 6 weeks at the moment and i'm just keeping them totally seperate but making sure they swap around areas so both gets to know the smell of the other. I figure after a few days of this I can try a slow careful introduction again. I've no in
  3. Thanks for the replies picked up a bitch today all were good and healthy looking so was able to choose a rough coat. Though im hoping i just may have rushed an introduction with ferrets. The ferrets are allowed to roam part of the house and not wanting them killed i wanted a young pup. However one of the ferrets gave her a nip and continues to try to do so. Im hoping if i keep them apart for a week or so them they will get used to the smell and such. Any advice on how best to introduce them as this 7 week pup would get mauled if i just leave them to it.
  4. Ok so ive been offered a pick from a litter of 3/4 lakeland russells and very tempted to go for one. However I'm not sure what things I should be looking out for to put me off, so can someone give me an idiots guide to the good and bad points I should be looking for when viewing these pups before I make a final choice? Also I'm assuming that the way I've been told "3/4 lakeland russell" indicates that the makeup should me 3/4 lakeland or am I wrong?
  5. Was chatting to the guys selling the ferret boxes and hunting dvd's on saturday and they told me about a bunch of folk with a facebook page as I'm wanting to get into the sport and looking for local folk to go learn the ropes with. Now I was sure they told me the page name was "lurchers and terriers northern ireland/ireland" but for the life of me I can't find their page anywhere. Anyone here know of them or at least throw me a direct link to the page would be a great help thanks. I've reposted this in the lurchers/terriers/ferret sections deliberatley just incase they don't look at them al

  8. Ok folks hear me out for a moment before mass laughter begins. I fully accept this may not be possible and have very low expectations from the off, however I would also like to get into ferreting and don't wish to waste a stack of cash of things I may not keep should it all go belly up. Ok so background is the gf has 3 jills and 1 hoblet simply as pets, she has cat alergies and I refuse to have a dog in this house for reasons of simple space and cruelty. Thus ferrets were an ideal filler and gave my ears a rest. I know that unlike dogs you can't simply turn what was once cute and adorable
  9. Hoping some folks can give some tips on an issue. Obviously terriers have a good prey drive and love to shake the crap out of things (ideal for rat control and bushing). But if I were to take my terrier out ferreting how do I first aclimatise him to the ferrets? How can I make sure that he won't come bounding upto me happily wagging holding a limp ferret that was mistaken? I'm taking a guess this will involve starting very very young and having them spend alot of time together, however this causes me worries in so far as playing with the dog to get him to hunt and shake could well transfer
  10. Hoping someone can offer some advice on a problem. I have 3 jills who are all fully intact, rather than dosing them with drugs half of the year I got myself a hob and had him vasactomised. He has been safe for mating now for the past week or so and has been in with the girls to bring them out of season. However things arn't working out as hoped, he has real difficulty getting the jills into position and now he can barely grip a neck without the jill turning and fighting back. Instead of just overpowering her and having his way he backs down from the fight each time. I'm pretty sure this ho
  11. The whole Liscence issue is a whopping double edged sword. On the one hand I completley agree that working men with working dogs should not have to foot the bill with regards to city stray dogs. However there is always the growing problem of city strays and the tide of online adverts for so called pedigree animals and stupid hybrids (labradoodle anyone?), I only need to click on my local gumtree to see eegits breeding animals for the sole purpose of asking a quick 500 for each akita pup. To my mind most of the dogs sold in this way have no purpose in the working world and so are just delbo
  12. Just wondering if there are any folks from either northern ireland (ideally NW) or donegal area that would be willing to show someone the ropes? Currently own 4 ferret (3 jills 1 hoblet), all are pets at the moment as had two for the missus and worked out cheaper to get a hoblet rather than jabbing each year, found one and got another jill thrown in for free. Got the usual "but she's cute" from the oh so said we could get her as long as the girls start working to pay their way. I realise the season is now over till the autumn, but if any folks are out on the odd day or such and want so
  13. Yup I originally used the jab as a pet ferret forum recommended it along with the implant for jills. Lucky for me my vet deals with agricultural animals so he actually knows things more than "fuzzieness". Along with lumps he informed me it can also cause phantom pregnancies, and some very unpleasent condition (the4 name escapes me) but basically kills your jill if she gets it. This along with messing with your girls hormones meant I was informed that if I never intended to breed the jill then spay her. Otherwise either breed her naturally or use a V hob. Normally I take most domestic vets with
  14. Can come back into season if your unlucky, one of my girls came in twice so far this year and the vet informed me that the jab isn't meant as any form of chemical castration it's just to delay the "heat". Vet told me that it is physically possible to come into season every 6-8 weeks all through the breeding year. Although he also didn't charge me for the second jab so can't argue there.
  15. Thanks for the repy, he is around a year old (fully grown size wise) so either came from a very early litter last year or a litter from 2010. I got him from some dizzy mare who obviously decided one day that "cute fuzzy things" are fun and then probably got nipped once and never touched him again. When I went to pick him up she wasn't there and her parents informed me they get looked in on every couple of days and thats it. Was kept in a shed in a rabbit hutch. Now I fully realise this boy have serious mental issues with both abandonment and being stuck in small spaces. So far I'm usin
  16. Got an intact hob yesterday as I will be getting him snipped for taking the jills out of season. Now I realised before hand he will be abit nippy and such at the moment as his hormones are all over the place. Also the fact he can smell three girls is likely winding him up abit. However currently he is a danger to have near open flesh (hands/face) as all he will do is attempt to bite down hard and drag it off for mating. So far have been wrapping my hand in a towel so he can bite and shake it while throwing him an old cushion to mate with, simply so he can get some relief and not be so woun
  17. Hi all anyone got a hob in either northern ireland or donegal? I'm based in derry wanting one for taking my girls out of season. Ideal world free but happy to pay, nothing over 2yrs old please.
  18. Totally agree that 5 is abit of a handful, but I know full well if I land home with just the hob and the missus wasn't invited along to see him for the road trip i'll get ear ache, if she comes and i say no to the "cutesy" girls she gets her mits on, i'll get ear ache. so for a quiet life extra chaos of ferrets is a small price to pay. The two I have at the moment are more pets than workers but I'm under the impression that like working dogs you are taking advantage of the animals natural instincts more than your own training, and thus it shouldn't make any difference if they are kept in a hut
  19. I currently have two jills around 10 months old, both had the jab in febuary to take them out of season, now one has come back in again. Didn't take much maths to work out the cost of jabbing each multiple times and petrol to the vets all summer long is going to be cheaper to get a hob snipped and feed him each year than this jabbing business (although bloody good business for the vet). Plus I don't like the idea of filling my girls full of drugs all the time too. Now I've had a look about and found an offer of a 2 yr old fully intact hob, so happy days there, but two problems. Firstly I o
