Own & breed several species of deer & antelope
  1. "Common" (spotted summer coat with dark dorsal stripe & black caudal stripes) is the "natural/true" colour for both species of fallow deer (Persians are more orange than the Europeans though). The white, black & menil pelage are all domesticated colour morphs. Khakibob
  2. Hunting deer (sambar) with hounds is one of the few huntng traditions we have down here.Tens of thousands are taken annually on public land for a licence of about 40 bucks a year with no bag limit..It disperses deer & spreads the kill across all ages & sex.. Hound hunters usually do not exclude other hunters or stalkers. Usually the opposite, they'll invite you for a run. Show me better game management than that? Hounds are used not dogs. The hounds must not grab the deer just sent trail until it crosses a shooter or bails up where a shooter sneakes in & dispatches it (not that e
  3. There is a huge future in "game management". Game keeping? Seems the money & hours aren't so good. Hunting is a huge industry, start to value it & remuneration will come. As for the furure.Do a property based management plan, become the manager & hunting guide. Run your own business. Take the risk & the reward. Cheers khakibob
  4. jamie g, are weaver style "reversable" bases & rings avaliable ? Weaver might be better for a rail or bridge mount . With 2 piece bases they may not provide the flexability or eye relief for all scopes or shooters. Fine if they do. Cheers Khakibob
  5. The howa is already drilled & tapped for good mounts. Mounts for the Rem 700,S&W,Vanguard,CMC,etc fit the Howa. Khakibob
  6. Gibbo 1973 Throw those mounts in the bin.Buy leopold redfield type "steel" bases & the right "steel"rings to suit your scope. How high?Do you need a reversible ring for eye relief? Locktite the screws & put a dab of 2 pack epoxy under each base. After getting the scope positioned vert/horisontal & eye relief put a dab of epoxy under the top half of each ring & locktight the screws. This is what I do, although I dont scope rifles heavier than 375 cal.I have put many thousamds of rounds through scoped medium to large cal rifles, which also get very abused without issues or
  7. G'day Lewdan Here's a simple way to explain sectional density. If you were to drop two projectiles with the same shape but different lengths off a roof into a vat of butter, the one with the highest SD would penetrate further. It would be the one longest relative to the surface area. If one was blunt instead of sharp,& all things else being equal the sharpest would go further. The sharpest will have the highest balistic coefficient. Balistic coefficient is not something I would worry about in a hunting bullet,as long as you can tell the front from the back when you look at it wil
  8. jamie g ,whats the eye relief like on the doctor? Cheers Kahkibob
  9. G'day TGEvans The main difference is the safety. Its not the price I considered when suggesting leupold, its the eye relief.Leupold have the longest. The mounting system is strong, but not as friendly to scopes with short eye relief. I like rugers but see many with poorly mounted/wrong scope. There is not the large range of reversable bases & rings that is avaliable for the other makes. This is not to put down the ruger.I would own it before any push feed. But I'm a hunter not a paper puncher. Cheers Khakibob
  10. G'day Sidelock Why does it have to be a plastic tip? Cheers Khakibob PS Sorry I can't help
  11. G'day TGEvans.Hope you got the MK11,with 3 position safety. I like rugers & own a few, as a controlled round feed is still the best for hunting. The scope mounting system is strong, however you don't have the option of reversable bases or rings (ok you can order reversable rings, but theyre too high),.This means for some folks they can't get enough eye relief from the scope. Leupold still have the best eye relief, so suit the rugers best. I'd guess your walking up the pigs so shots could be close & fast, low power comes into it's own then.I'd use a 1.5x5 x 20 myself if pigs are an opt
  12. G'day Born hunter. Same down here, if a fairdinkum bloke asks for access he'll usually get a yes. If he goes about it the wrong way, word gets around & we have long memories. If youve had a bad run with thieves you're less likley to say yes,so they're also stealing opportunity & access from honest hunters too,not to mention how the anti's love to use this against ourselves. I'm just a bit concerned after reading this thread, as one of my neighbours asked me last night if his father in law from England (old mate did say he used to poach there) & he can roll a deer on my place
  13. Correct me if I'm wrong but is poaching considered ok,or almost like robin hood & romantic, by sections of the hunting community in the UK ? If this is the case why would those who invest in producing a surplus of game & therefore have a interest, stake, ownership in it bother ? We call poachers thieves down here & this is from a country where you once had to have a criminal record to enter. Not trying to start a war, just confused by the level of acceptence for stealing someone elses hunting opportunity. Cheers Khakibob
  14. Cheers danw,& thanks for the link. Khakibob
  15. G'day Down here we have two species of fallow, D dama & D mesopotamica,no deer are indigenous to Aus. The meso's are only here a couple of decades & brought in for increasing body size for farmed deer & they are several weeks ahead of D dama seasionaly which gves the fawns/dams better access to the spring flush. The D dama have been here 150 years & were originaly fron English parks.Hungarian fallow have been imported in the last few decades to improve trophys. Most of our wild herds are still English park fallow. My question is. As fallow are not indigenous to the UK
