  1. ok mate whatever you reckon. so how do you explain the fact that grass and dirt get caught in there after a bit run and he natually wears them out? i never cut them. Does this sound like he never uses them?
  2. my dog with dew claws sometimes uses them to grip the ground when he turns or and slides backward he digs them in to get grip. My other dog without dew claws doesn't have any problems turning either even though he has none. They have a different running style though. I don't think they are necessary but some dogs can probably use them to a certain extent for gripping. Best to be on the safe side though if it is going to be a problem.
  3. One of my whippets has his dew claws and has never had any problems. I don't have an aweful lot of experience with running dogs. I have two whippets. One with and one without and these are my first running dogs that i have owned.
  4. Nice looking dogs. I can't see why they wouldn't work. I've got two shorthaired whippets that are show bred and it sure doesn't stop them working. I suppose whippets haven't been shown long enough to breed out their hunting instinct. They have a strong prey drive and willingness to catch and kill any small moving creature. If you have a look on this page they do look like whippets to me http://home.ica.net/~westwood/breedersforum.htm as some in the litter turned out smooth and they are exactly like a smooth whippet in looks. Interesting.
  5. wb Frank still waiting for those pics
  6. I was thinking a whippet/kelpie would make a good rabbit dog. Especially if you chose a more lightly built kelpie. Kelpie are very good at stalking things so i would say it would make quite a cunning hunter. Probably good for feather as well.
  7. awesome pics. you have to love the way they crash and then get up like nothing happened ready for more action. Determined little guys. I'm always holding my breath when my two run around just missing trees etc in our back yard. I'm just standing there praying they wont end up hitting something.
  8. lol If you didn't already get the message coyote there is no photo. Try again.
  9. My dogs had it, it wasn't the most pleasant experience particularly when they are in the house coughing all night. Its a nasty rasping type cough as well. The vet said not to give them cough medicine as this can slow their recovery by not letting them clear their lungs as well. He just gave me some antibiotics which initially helped alot but after i stopped giving them the antibiotics the cough came back and took about a week for it to clear up. The still seemed active with the cough and would still run around even if they ended up coughing though i tried to restrict their activities. The ant
  10. Nice one bigdan, wonderful animals they are. I have two myself, my first running dogs they are. From my little experience thus far they are excellent for rabbits and are a natural rabbitting on the lamp. Mine picked it up from day one. I'm hoping they will bag some hares in the future given a bit more maturity. Haven't done any ratting with them yet. They don't tend to be big eaters. I feed mine twice a day as much as they want. They don't seem to overeat.
  11. i am thinking of putting one of my whippet dogs over a saluki for a hare and rabbiting dog, just an idea at this stage. I like the idea of a smaller dog with enough speed and stamina to take both hares and rabbits.
  12. Nice one Frank, glad to see she is coming along nicely.
  13. lol i can see Frank dreaming about those long ears
  14. yeah the cattle dog done that to my grandmother's silky terrier, grabbed it around the neck but the terrier asked for it really the snappy little thing.
  15. my younger whippet dog seems to be getting possessive about certain things and is showing a little agression towards the older whippet. He only does it with rabbits, bones or his favourite toy. They can eat out of the same bowl without any troubles but when it comes to his "precious" its a different story. Its especially problematic when a rabbit is involved. Last night i gave them a rabbit skin to play with and when he saw the older one with it got ran at him growling an had a snap it him. The other whippet is very gentle and unconfrontational but he will defend the odd bone. He looked qutie
  16. haha my two whippets seem to have claimed the couch much to my mother's disgust. They spend the day outside having free roam of our yard then spend the night inside.
  17. Its funny my younger whippet who is nearly ten month has never yelped/yapped behind quarry but has done it a few time when chasing my other older whippet. I have only heard my older whippet of 12 months yelp/yapp when chasing a hare. He has never done it with a rabbit so i'm quessing it is frustration as he couldn't gain on the hare easily like he would with the rabbit.
  18. I shot three rabbits with a shotgun, killed two of them but the third managed to get to its burrow injured. My old man couldn't believe it and he's been hunting all his life, they were just sitting there "kissing" each other
  19. lol yeah he sure loves giving those goannas a good shake. He did the same to a few possums but you can imagine there wasn't much left of the possum, cracked every bone in its body and it was completely furless by the time he was finished with it. Its funny how they love the water dragons, mine would also spend ages in the creek trying to find where it went and was relentless trying to track them down.
  20. yes this is in australia the only problem is we have thick bush near where i live in they are mostly in there and rarely out in the open. Its hard for the the whippets to chase them in the thick bush and they take flight quickly. If they caught one out in the open it would be easy for them. yes they are everywhere, they even live in the city now. They live in peoples backyards and rip up their gardens etc trying make nests. My cattle dog used to be fond of chasing them through the scrub when he was younger as well be never did manage to get one as he is quite solidly built and found it
  21. My whippet caught a dove. Funny enough this was his first kill My Australian cattle dog who is now 13 y/o caught many goannas and used to rag them real good. He also used to like catching water dragons (which is a kind of lizard that lives near the water) and used to dive in the water after them and stick his head under the water to try and find them.
  22. Has anyone used snares supplied by these people http://www.solwayfeeders.com/ http://www.solwayfeeders.com/ProductsResultsList1.asp?cat=17 I ordered some snares and they look very strong and well made but the loop doesn't look that big. Its about 7 inches wide by 5 inches high. Do you think this is big enough? I'm also a newbie snarer.
  23. This is such sad news and i'm totally shocked even though i didn't know this man personally. I didn't know his condition was so life threatening and i was expecting him to be back with us in no time. My deepest sympathies to his friends and family and may the Lord be merciful and give his soul rest in peace. You will be missed L/G.
  24. I've got two whippets and they seem to love their birds. One caught a dove after chasing it into the fence. Funny enough that was his first kill. I used to have free range chickens (red indian jungle fowl aka wild chickens) but the whippets kept catching them so i had to get rid of them. By the time my whippet was around 4 or 5 months there wasn't really much i could do from stopping him catching them as he couldn't resist it when they run in front of him. He didn't kill any though, he would just catch them and hold them till i got them out of his mouth. I honestly don't think its possible to
  25. All the best with your recovery and i hope its a quick one. I've been in that situation to so i know what its like, just keep looking forward to when you get out.
