  1. Its the same situation with my dogs. They are very intense when chasing each other. I have two whippet dogs (8 1/2 months and 11 1/2 months). The often chase each other extremely fast. We also have a large yard and they are outside most of the time, i can't stop them having a chase. The younger dog is a very tough dog, he was raised with our australian cattle dog which used to chase him till he tired and they used to wrestle all day long. There was not much i could do to stop them. I think this hardened him up alot. He had no difficulty whatsoever catching his first rabbit. It seemed li
  2. went out sunday night lamping with my two whippets. This was my and the dogs first time lamping rabbits and they managed to catch the first rabbit they saw so i'm really happy. The older dog was slipped first and run into some timber chasing the rabbit and badly bruised the top of one of his front leg and it was my 8 1/2 month old pup that caught the rabbit in the end. I decided to call it a night shortly after as the older dog was having difficulty walking and i wanted him to take it easy. He was limping really badly, he's ok now. Managed to see some more rabbits with the lamp on the way
  3. thanks Frank. I will do. All the best with yours as well and let us know how she does in the future.
  4. yes i hope to bag some big ears to in fact my dogs seem more excited when they know there is big ears around. My dogs are both 20 inches and around 13 kg (28.5 lbs.)
  5. Nice one Frank. She's looking good. Quite a strong and tough looking girl. Whippets sure are fast little creatures, its amazing watching them run sometimes. I just pray they don't end up crashing into something when i'm watching them run like mad in between trees etc and turning at the last second to avoid crashing. happy hunting
  6. lol. 9.75 rabbits a day would be alot of protein. The truth is i don't go rabbiting that often and love eating them. What i catch doesn't get wasted.
  7. I have eaten every rabbit i have killed. The dogs usually get to have a bit to. They like the liver and kidneys. Rabbit stewed with baby onions in tomato and red wine sauce is one of my favourite dishes.
  8. From what i am hearing it sounds like whippets lack stamina to be good hare dogs? correct me if i'm wrong. I can't see size or speed being an issue with my two dogs as they are quite a good size at 20 inches compared to alot of other whippets i have seen, particularly some bitches are much smaller and they sure can put on the speed when they have to. Hopefully i will account for a few with the two dogs otherwise it will be good sport like you said and the hares will have fun getting away, lol. The hares in my area will be nice and fit I like the idea of daytime haring. I know i could alwa
  9. this is the one i had in mind http://www.clulite.com.au/products/clubman.html
  10. she's looking good Frank. Nice and strong looking. All the best with her. Keep us updated on her progress.
  11. thanks. They are from no special working lines. They both come from show lines. the fawn and white one comes from collooney lines. They both stand at the same height at 20 inches. I did state in another post that they were 19 inches but i didn't measure them properly, just in case anyone is wondering how they grew an inch, lol. I will let you know how they go when i take them out. Have you got any pics of your pup?
  12. the dogs are 11 months and 8 months. The fawn and white one is the older.
  13. yes i like the clulite as well and i think it would be worth paying a bit extra. My whippets haven't had a chance to chase any rabbits yet but that will change soon As far as rabbit dogs i think they are the best. They can turn like none other dog and accelerate so quick. Only time will tell though. They are showing alot of potential and will rag a dead rabbit with much enthusiasm and rabbits skins seem to be their favourite play toy.
  14. I have a choice between a Clulite clubman deluxe with a 50 w 1000 000 candle power lamp and a Lightforce walkabout kit with a 30 w 500 000 candle power lamp. The Clulite is a bit more expensive. Is it worth paying more for the extra candle power or is 500 000 sufficient? advice appreciated. I might add i will be using the lamps with my two whippets. thanks
  15. Nice looking dog, what is its breeding?
  16. Hi link, where in aus are you? have you got a pic of your whippet? i'm yet to put my dogs on a hare as they are too young i have been told and its best to go easy when they are young. I hope it wasn't too physically demanding on her. I'm going to wait until my dogs are at least 12 months before i let them have a go at a hare. They seem quite capable though and i'm keeping them nice and fit and taking them out alot. happy hunting
  17. cattle dogs generally work cattle while kelpies work sheep. Cattle dogs are also a bit more solid boned and stronger and have dingo in them as well as some other breeds such as bull terrier and dalmation which were crossed with old collie type dogs. A bit different in temperament as well. Cattle dogs tend to be more protective and have strong guarding instincts. Both are very hard workers with a lot of stamina and very hardy breeds.
  18. i have an australian cattle dog. They are very hardy working dogs. They are quite natural killers as well since they have dingo in them and they go after just about anything. They are absolutely fearless. I was thinking of making a greyhound/cattle dog cross for a while. Only problem with the breed is they are a bit dog aggressive and dominant of other dogs. Here is a pic of my dog at 13 years old with one of my whippets.
  19. ok thanks for the replies. I was planning on running them as a pair. That is why i got a second whippet. So the other dog didn't have to carry the whole burden of doing the work. I eat everything i kill. I have never been the sort of person that just kills for the sake of killing or kills for fun. I will always have respect for my quarry, even rabbits i respect even though many people call them a pest and say they need to be erradicated. Every rabbit or hare etc that i take ends up on the dinner table. I think you learn to respect your quarry more when hunting with a sighthound
  20. they are a bit young my friend and its not a good idea for a young dog to get behind a hare i believe. I need to wait till they are more experienced and older. I just want to know how good they are at taking hares and should i expect them to take a few during the day. {edit}sorry shepp i didn't see your reply until after i posted mine. I was responding to terrier man. I'm aware that they are still too young I just want to know what to expect from them in the future. I want to know their limitations.
  21. Can anyone tell me how good whippets are at taking hares during the day? I live in australia and we are allowed to hunt hares here. Has anyone had experience with whippets and hares in the past (ie before the ban over there) or know anyone that has? I have two male whippet dogs. I posted some pics of them recently. I'm hoping they will pic up some hares during the day or are they only good at taking them while lamping? thanks
  22. they are both about 19 inch at the shoulder. The younger dog managed to catch a dove yesterday that was his first kill.
  23. BLACKBOB i can see the resemblance. thanks for the replies. I am very happy with both the dogs. The are showing potential. I live in the south east of Queensland. The terrain is quite flat and grassy. Lots of open fields and farms. Its not very mountainous or rocky. There is an abundance of hares where i am but for rabbits i have to do a bit of travelling to get to a good area. happy hunting
