  1. Roy's dogs are highly regarded. They have proven successful in working trials and out in the field
  2. I'm off to watch a field trial tomorrow, and I'm currious as to how many of the people trialling the dogs competing will actually work their dogs to either rough shooting or on a "propper shoot"? Is trialling a sport of it's own, or is there plenty of crossover between the two?
  3. Whilst I do enjoy watching mr fearlny whittingstall - I think I get my hands dirty hunting a bit more than he does! He's got 40 acres now, how good would that be!!!!
  4. Making money isn't the main priority, although I'm not going to turn my nose up at making some extra pennies realistically! It would be nice to cover some of the costs of growing and rearing my own stuff if possible. I want to grow my own food and enjoy eating it, am toying with the idea of having a rabbit pen for people with gundogs to hire for training purposes, but we'll see. It's looking like May/June before I'm moving in so plenty of time to plan it. I'm very excited about it all, have grafted for 15 years for this!
  5. I fancy having sheep & pigs for our own consumption and to then sell off the surplus stock - I figure this will help towards the costs of rearing / slaughter/ butchering them ( at least until I can butcher my own!)
  6. thats the best pound per acre Need abit of knowledge to grow that stuff outside in this country, Cheers fd. Not really for me that - I want to be able to relax whilst I'm at home, not fearing for a knock on the door off the old bill!
  7. I hadn't really thought of boarding kennels. I worked on a plant nursery for 6 years when younger and considered growing some plants to sell at car boot sales / farmers markets etc. Whilst making money isn't the priority, I would like to cover my costs of feeds etc for animals when everything is set up and running. How many hours a week do you spend working on the smallholding?
  8. That sounds great, cheers! I didn't realise I would be able to do so much! The Alpaca's seam to be fetching silly money, is there much money to be made from selling the wool? How long did it take you to get it all up and running?
  9. There is a fair chance of me moving to a cottage with 6 acres later in the year. With 6 acres what would be good to grow / keep? Was thinking a few hens and ducks for eggs. Then maybe some sheep & goats for food and alpaca's for the fun of it. Also planning on growing a few veg. Is all this do able on 6 acres? Cheers
  10. Hi, Where abouts, what costs are involved? could you pm me please?
  11. I've used a staffy for this in the past
  12. If this is going to be your only dog to be used ferreting, I'd see if you can see a lab out doing the job. Labs are great peg dogs, but not as renounned for hunting or marking. Could be worth looking at HPR breeds? Not heard of a Lab being used ferreting, not saying it couldn't do it though!
  13. I've decided to branch out into the world of shotgun shooting and am after some advice for a first gun please. Having had a read of some of the magazines, there is a multitude of guns out there. I want something to shoot clays (better to learn to shoot on non live targets!), then rabbits, pigeons and the odd day game shooting. Suggestions please, how much should I be looking to spend? Can I get something for around £500? Cheers
  14. Fair enough, I just thought for walked up mouching during the day it may prove effective, the concern I was thinking would have been in the retrieve as I'd expect both dogs to be keen to be involved in that. As for it defeating the point of having a lurcher, I dont really agree. My lurcher catches bunnys fine that he has seen or hunted up himself, he marks warrens well and is effective on the lamp. I'm not ashamed to admit that his nose finding bunnies out in the day time isn't always great. We take plenty of walked up bunnies and the ones he finds; but I'm convinced we miss a few whil
  15. Hi All, Was with a guy who flys hawks yesterday and he uses a HPR dog to find the rabbits and then sends the hawks on them after he commands the dog to flush it. Anyone ever tried this with a lurcher? Using something that will hold point on a bunny out in open fields and then send the lurchers off to catch it? Wouldn't mind seeing that, Mikey
  16. There are some really good working strains of WHV's. I was in your position and was looking at both HWV's and GWP's. Met reeders of both working strains and fell in love with the Vizsla. Temperament is different to smooth haireds as well. They quite a "delicate" dog, dont like firm hands...
  17. Yeah I know what you mean, the parents qualities are really important, but I always thought it was worth looking into the traits of the different types of dogs as well. Just because one saluki cross has a great recall doesn't mean all it's offspring will etc. I guess I'm just quite sad and enjoy reading up on future purchases! I don't have the luxury of having specific working dogs that could be passed on if not up to scratch (to be fair not sure I'd want to, the next dog will be a family pet and working dog in equal measure... Cheers
  18. Thanks for all the replies, It's interesting to get other peoples opinions on the different breeds. In terms of height do beardie crosses tend to make smaller height than borders? (talking first cross here) Cheers
  19. Hi All, My dogs getting on now (he's and I'm looking around and deciding on what to get for the next pup. I like the idea of a collie cross for the (intelligence) but am trying to find out a bit more regarding the difference (if any) that the type of collie used may have in terms of personality and trainability etc. It will live in the house and work with the ferrets, the staffy (a great bushing dog!) and also on the lamp, no long ears or red things where I go... opinions? Cheers
  20. anyone get any of the gear? what's the quality like?
