seen two from the same litter in the 1970s, both decent dogs, as far as catching stuff went, one was racy and the other cloddy, the cloddy one used to kill hares, he ran like a fen dog, every race lasted five mins and he kill it in the dyke, and he yapped the whole time lol

I've seen pure labs do similar, coursing hares on shoot days with their owner yelling 'til he's red in the face. Too late to train them in the shooting field:D

I like the "Moggy". I've travelled miles in them, mostly the vans and travellers though.?I believe there's a factory somewhere that makes upgraded parts and electronic ignition and so on for them now.

  2. When I was a young fella, back in the olden days, I'd read all the greyhound books (there was no lurcher books back then except "Of Pedigree Unknown) and I'd gotten lots of advice. I gave cod liver oil, wheatgerm for vit.E, and a load of other stuff and trimmed most of the fat off their meat when trying to get them fit.

These days I'm not sure all that crap makes a lot of difference. With a good diet they honestly don't need it and overdosing with vitamins can be positively harmful.

Lots of meat fat in their food, oily fish once or twice a week and maybe a slight dusting of seaweed powder on their food and possibly some tinned tomatoes or a little banana if they like it (for potassium) is the right way to go. If you do give any vitamin supplement then give a bit less than it says on the label but natural is the best way to go. Nothing shines their coat better than fatty meat. Nature knows best. It was nature, not drug companies that evolved the wolf and dogs are basically wolves.

  3. Cracking vid Sandy. I like watching galgos run but usually get bored after 20 mins or so. This one I watched all the way. A few dodgy slips but I guess it happens on walked up meets. The ground looked right hard and stony. I doubt if many greys ( or lurchers even?) would have come up sound after running on that.

I think today in modern times a racer dog is needed so f1 collie x greyhounds is not of much use to most people I think a f1 round my ends would find its self wanting an out matched but I think a f1 is a great starting point to get a decent Lurcher to Lurcher line of the ground I suppose if you was just a ferreting chap there be pretty handy to have a f1 working the warrens

I find the opposite round here. It's mostly grass land where I go rabbiting, dairy with beef. An f1's OK for marking but lacks a bit of pace for running down bolters. A nice f1 comes into it's own for lamping though and other stuff too, given the right temperament.

  5. Sound construction can mean that a dog is less likely to pick up injuries and more likely to run well. I don't mean whether a dog is light and racy or heavy and strong, but whether its well balanced and proportioned.

Now to me, those qualities ARE what makes a dog nice looking.

Feet are another discussion altogether as the shape, ie. cat footed vs. flat footed seems less important than the strength of bone and cartilage in there, and to my mind a bit of sensible exercise on hill and woodland while still a pup helps here. Maybe it helps them deveop a sensible running style too???

yh it is mate,,i thought the topic was like in the stud section or something not the main lurcher one i just put hes still here if anyone wants to use him, then realised it was in the main section and id only get the usual's giving me grief, and your right about the one bollock but like you say if he is genuine collie grey good dogs and few and fair between and the dog relay is all go so he may be handy for somone to use if there looking for a decent collie x as to be honest most of them you hear about are no good or start off well but soon get to cleaver or dont like the job there doing,i cant talk for the dog as to big bags of rabbits ect that there usaly known for but he will get his chance this season and see how he goes he may be to old for that but i just dont know atm

Most of the collie/greys I've had over the years would take a bag of rabbits but my favourites were 2 first cross dogs and a second cross bitch and all three of those would fire up when necessary. It makes the dog a lot more interesting to hunt with IMO.

That's surely the dog you have Lurcher Lad?? He looks a fine dog to be fair.? I know that monorchidism (that's what it's called) is hereditary and would probably reappear in future generations and I would normally advise against breeding from him, BUT, if this dog is definitely only collie and greyhound he'd be worth a go. As Bunnys say's, good, game, collie/greys can be hard to find. When they are good they ARE good and should be bred from really.

Ye should all get a wheaten cross. It looks like a deerhound but can do everything that a bull cross can. No need to argue then ?????

I'd agree with what you say there except for

    a)  Some wheatons are a bit fizzy and kick off without warning and..

    b)Arguing's good,  there's always a need for it.:boxing::spiteful:

Lurcher lad, you don't really have to do everything there is all at once.:D You've got years ahead of you still and I wish I had. "Youth is wasted on the young".

  10. I really enjoyed that vid mate. Mink are regarded as a pest here as they aren't native and they kill gamebirds, chickens etc. and they impact a bit on salmon and trout, especially on the spawning beds. People trap them but in spite of that I see them regularly.

I like mustelids myself and I'm happy to see the pine martin back in this area now though I'm sure not many hunting people would agree with me on that.
