  2. No weaker than a scissor bit just cause your undershot. Terriers jaws do not lock its just the way they decide to bite and cause damage. I would imagine there could be a problem if a mouth is severely deformed and not lining up properly that would cause them to not bite well, BUT, to say if a dogs bite is imperfect it is inferior to a scissor mouth only shows me how little one knows. FUNCTION. If for whatever reason a dog cannot bite whether its because he has a perfect scissor bite and lacks strength in other areas needed for biting or he's missing, or has a deformed mouth what ever it is t
  3. If mother nature is the standard for our dog breeding programs I say F#$K mother nature! Most of us breed WAY better animals that lb per lb KICK THE DOG SH%T out of her animals! What is a "good" bite? One where all the teeth fit together perfectly? Is that it? Is that all that has to be to earn the seal of approval in ones breeding program? I go back to my 1st comment on this topic. Would you breed from the dog with a scissor bite that can't bust a grape, or the undershot dog that bites like a gator! Bite, or teeth alignment to me gets judged no different than any other physical attr
  4. MainAttraction Again,a lot of real good posts, but yours is a great one and pretty much exactly the point I was surprised at,and wanted to just see how others thought..uru Thank you. There are a lot of things that some people do that I am a little taken back by. I don't give a damnn what another man does with his yard, but for me for those who are culling pups for instance because they are undershot It tells me a lot about this guys goals, and understanding. Those who practice this give all sorts of reasons behind it, but really all I'm left thinking is this person either hasn't produced
  5. I think the motivation of this entire thread is to show how disturbing it is that one would consider looks/confirmation as a high priority in evaluating a worker. This thought I have to be frank disturbs me. People who cull pups for imperfect confirmation, etc I can't wrap my head around. For me sorting your workers has more to do with how high your standard are for their given type of work and less to do with body types, mouths, etc. I'm shocked that any seasoned person associated with working dogs still finds themselves perplexed deciding which dogs he is to love and embrace based on appeara
  6. Heres a blab I wrote about mine. I breed crossed terriers and really enjoy them. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/216742-enjoyed-reading-about-yours-here-is-a-lil-about-mine/
  7. A better question is if both dogs are complete workers and comparable to each other in every way but one has a scissor bite but can't bust a flippin grape, and the other is undershot but bites like a damnn gator which one would you pick? I know the one I'd choose. If the function is very good than the form is very good.
  8. Nice work Curtis on digging Badgers. this place is a good place to learn. I wish people would keep their criticism respectful though. I don't know why when some people get on the internet they lose their couth. Happy hunting
  9. I used them for years. Don't do the typical guy thing and over engineer it. If your keeping terriers in them don't get the 55 gal barrels get the 30 gallon. The smaller the dog house the better they will hold heat. They don't need to stand up and dance a jig in there its not a dance hall its meant to be a den. You can usually get the smaller 30gal barrels from the car wash after their empty of soap. Where ever you get them make sure only non hazzardous liquids were stored in them (soy sause, soap, etc). Cut a 8x8, or 10x10 square hole in the upper section of the top of the barrel. DO NOT CENT
  10. I don't know much about bull terriers but had a few questions? Weren't they originally used as a fighting dog, but eventually were discontinued for fighting in favor of the pitbull? If they were a member of the fighting dog class then why wouldn't you try to make a hunting dog from the best member ie the game bred pitbull? Game bred pitbulls usually get along fine with other non threatening dogs IF properly socialized while growing up. They are also bred to be athletes and intelligent. Seems like a big task to try to make working dog from dogs bred to be pets and nothing more and will more
  11. DavidR: Thats my foundation bitch Kizzy. She is a grand mother of the bulldog Waylon I used in my 1st cross. She was a sweet heart with people but meaner than snot with anything else that had fur. KawValley: I hunt mostly wetlands/swamp lands for coon, and beaver that destroy levee's. All other specie my dogs catch are incidental (Badgers, skunks, possum, coyotes, etc). However, I find coyotes to be the most fascinating, and most challenging of all predators in my area. Often their is reference made about "that wise old fox", etc when in fact its common knowledge that coyotes are way s
  12. Like all breedings they are too individual to make too many general statements about. Most guys breed pet bred pitbulls, or staffs to good working terrier blood and put them in the same catagory as some of us that used perfomance bred pitbulls from blood that is top of the food chain in their given work. A 50/50 cross IS NOT too big for earthwork IF bred from the correct bulldogs. In fact a pure bred pit dog that is small is NOT too big for European earth work. Anything less than 1/4 ANYTHING will hardly give you any significant effects. A 50/50 will do excellent work above, and below for l
