  1. Thanks everyone sounds worth a try then. Greg I did look at muscovy but they seem hard to contain in a garden to me.
  2. How much noise do they make? I have a road that runs down the side of my garden with a couple of bungalows the closest being about 15 metres away, are they likely to be disturbed by them at this distance? Was thinking of keeping about 6. Thanks
  3. Got a walnut fork and another hazel near done, the gap between the forks is close to the same size so I'm hoping theyl shoot the same as the hawthorn. Back on the subject of sticks I have a blackthorn just outside my garden which should give me 2 possibly 3 sticks without hurting the tree to much, 1 of them has a kind of ready made handle on it. Only trouble with it is I hear it needs seasoning for 2 years minimum.
  4. Cheers mate yeah thought I'd make a few sticks, dont want to buy off eBay as im really enjoying wandering the woods looking for forks and sticks. Catapult looks good, the one I just made I gave a few wipes over with raw linseed oil but it didn't give it the effect I was hoping for so I finished with a polyurethane spray, looks good but I'm not keen on the plastic feel. Now I just need to practice my shooting.. Found the fork a little bit big so just trimmed it down an inch or so and finished with a coat of clear lacquer once I was happy, also one fork was a few mill longer than tother so got t

  7. Cheers that makes sense, I'm going to cut a few hazel sticks as well, i think I'll wait until January for them.
  8. i use a dremel for the band notches and i leave the bark on but thats because im in no hurry to dry the forks out...it depends how quickly you need them i guess. Some lads dry their forks in the microwaveThanks I have a dremel, do you use the sanding drum for the Notches? I'm not in a big hurry to dry forks as I have one oak catapult almost finished and I cut another from a fallen tree that was perfectly seasoned so ive got enough to keep me busy for a while.
  9. Getting back into catapult shooting and have collected a few natural forks in oak, hawthorn, hazel, and this morning cut a couple of walnut forks. Couple of questions, is it ok to strip the bark off fresh forks to dry them faster or are they more likely to crack without the bark? What tool do you use to carve out the band Notches?
  10. I used to breed quail and 3/4 of the chicks turned out to be males, absolute pain in the ass. I bred hundreds of the suckers too. It's annoying I was hoping for between 7 and 10 hens out of that lot, I'll give it another go very soon and see what I get.
  11. Damn just sexed the chicks and out of 17 I've got 2 hens 10 roos 5 that are English whites so I won't be sure until they start producing the foam, I had a look at the vents anyway and they look male to me. Are some cockerels inclined to produce more males than females or am I just unlucky? Anyone else ever had a ratio as bad as this?
  12. Lol nah the few males I've culled have gone on the bbq, the ferrets get the heads and guts though. Hatched 17 the other day, the first I've bred from my own birds.
  13. Spoke to soon, got a hen with a severely pecked head. Purple antiseptic spray is an essential with these birds.
  14. All has settled down nicely with my quail now, no more fighting at all. The odd hen with some feathers pulled out of the back of her head when the cock has been to keen but other than that fine.
  15. Makes sense, I'll be sticking with the incubator though because as I said I don't want to keep chickens.
  16. Do the chicks have as high as survival rates under a broody? I won't be using a broody hen for my quail because I don't want to keep chickens.
  17. Not sure about CPQ but Coturnix apparently very rarely go broody.
  18. These things are crazy, found one scalped the other day.
  19. Sent you a pm max but don't think you've seen it, what ebayer did you use? I'm wanting a few more eggs from a different breeder.
  20. I did cull in the end, it was quite severe so had no chance of feeding.
  21. One of mine has hatched with a severe crossed beak, do you usually cull cross beaked birds or see if they can feed?
  22. Both but the cock birds are worse they like mini pit fowl lol Cock birds might be first on the bbq then lol.
  23. Im about to hatch some quail, Only doing 24 but really looking forward to it. Do the hens fight or just the roos?
  24. Its supposed to turn cold this weekend, its finally going to get underway proper. Ive done very little so far this season partly because of the weather. Hope to get out at least a couple of times a week through to the end of February.
