Is that possible at 5 1/2 months old ???? Only going on how old my terrier was when she had her first season which was around the 6 months mark , but there all diferent i reccon i suppose it could be a possibility as i have never had a bitch before only dogs labradors so i guess it could be that will have to wait and see generally they are fine its only been the last 2 days as i say this is mt first running dog so my mate will ahve to keep his eye on them until i get round the missus to let me bring her home lol Well i hope you & your mate get them sorted out

its not hard to hunt with birds the hardest part is gaining the knowledge once the bird is entered it gets easier but you have to put an awfull lot of time into it in the first year especially read plenty of books get the knowledge and if possible get out woth another falconer and pick his brains watch and learn cheers pete
-
as ive stated previously i have been flying hawks for 14 years read plenty one of the best reads is training birds of prey by jamima parry jones its full of all sorts of info the more knowledge you have the better well being for the bird in my opinion female harris hawks are outstanding and faithfull they will forgive your mistakes as you will make them.stay away from redtails they are a handfull when you do eventually get one make sure in its first year you put as much time into it as you can i mean 5,6 or if possible 7 days a week out in the field.plenty of manning most importantly watch the

Hi all Can anyone give me some advise been hunting with hawks for 14 years birds now retired so i have bought a 5 mth old 3/4 greyhound 1/4 wheaten it is the sister to my mates dog same litter. they are kenneled together all has been fine took them out yesterday and a run round turned into two full blown kickoffs. we separted them and all seem fine again put them in the car and they started again so mine now has its first war wound on front leg my mates must have had her good and proper. any way put them back in the kennel and apart from a growl all is fine is this just a battle for domina

I have had shotguns for the last 4 years but due to cicumstances i had to sell them ( although i shouldnt need to explain ) my license is due for renewal in march so i want to put one on my license before the renewal date hope this explains it a bit more clearly thanks pete -
Hi ive been flying harris's for 14 years if the talon has broken off and either has or hasnt taken away the outer sheath its time for an early bath i say this as if the bird knocks it again and damages the core or the bed the talon might never grow back.To be fair the weather is bad and the ground is frozen well at least where i am it is and i usually put my birds up at the end of jan so to me you havent lost much flying time but i would always air on the side of caution so for what its worth feed her up for next year and let it grow back good luck pete

HI all i joined the site about a week ago just been editing my profile etc and next to my user name madmackie it says has not set their status what is this for there is nothing to add i donht think or am i supposed to type something in also can anyone tell me if there is the email/pm icon and an add as friend icon under my name for people to contact me when i post something as i also cant fine anything within the settings to add these sorry for being thick !! and thanks in advance pete

sorry but i disagree an owl (barn) will fly at around 7oz so you have very little room for error if the bird wont come and you dont feed it you run the risk of the bird going into shock and dying there is more room for error with a larger hawk like the harris if you want to have a barn owl come to you and be tame then do as i did and get it from a reputible breeder and get it at 7 days old so when it opens its eyes it thinks your mum and it will do anything you want it to as it is imprinted also remember owls are nocturnal so you have to basically turn their world upside down to fly in the day
-
Harris's will lamp no problem and catch plenty one word of advice dont go near trees when lamping as if yours is like mine once they see the trees they will sit up till dawn and it gets damn cold sitting there waiting also make sure you have telemetry on her as they do tend to move enjoy it i have been lamping my harris for 14 years its great
-
Get yourself a new mentor as this one talks out of his a--- the harris will be fine plenty of manning bring its weight down get it on a creyonce once its coming no hesitation let it go and catch you bunnies ive been flying harris's for 14 years before that ive had barn and tawny owls kestrels and even a bengal eagle owls
-
Hi i have had Harris Hawks now for 14 years males are more agile but i would always go for a female because of their size.Males do seem a little quicker but both are game for anything i know people who have got male harris's flying at 1 lb 5oz and take hares no problem. The bird will only be as good as the amount of time you put into it in the first year.Beleive me the first year is the most important show it as much quarry as you can.The coarses are good but you seem new to this so i would advise you to do the same as i did and read a book called training birds of prey by jamima parry jones
